Hi, im new to this forum and was wondering if you guys could help me figure out the problem with my cld-1070 laserdisc player. The device powers up and seems to read the disc, the cd icon show up on the player. When I press play, the disc starts spining up and then stops after 2 seconds. no error codes appear. Would this be a grip ring issue or somthing else with the player. All the capasitors and rubber bands look to be intact.

Does it play CDs?

No it does not. The player recognizes that a cd has been inserted, but fails to spin the disc past 2 seconds. Starts then stops.

Put a LD in. Power off, short TP302 to ground and power on and remove short. Press play on front of player and see if spindle reaches full speed. Don't try any of this if you aren't comfortable with it because you can brick your player. Better instructions can be found on pages 62 and 63 of service manual.

Other question that we forgot to ask.
Was this working then stopped or is this a flip project or bought as project?

I bought this as a project a week ago, but the seller did say it was working about 5 months ago but just stoped working and sold it as parts or repair. I will have to put my unit in test mode when I get my copy of t2 tonight.

I just reread your original post. People usually only check LD, but I see you only checked CD.

Definitely check LD before you go tinkering.

Do you mean it will play the CD for two seconds or the spindle will only start to spin for two seconds?

The spindle will only spin for 2 seconds for cds. Just tried out my ld of T2. The spindle starts spining for up to 6 seconds. I can hear a faint click on the 6th second with the front display saying open and the disc spinning down. Here is a video of the player in action.

If the previous owner didn't go tinkering on his own, this seems like something has failed in electronics. Possibly somewhere in focus servo path. Focus lock is achieved, so the disc spins up but then when reading is to begin, you can hear that loud clicking.

Maybe try and reseat the ribbon cable for the laser pick-up (on both ends) and see if that will make any difference. Could be a loose connection or you might discover a kink in it while looking at it.

I will take a look at the servo path when I get the chance. I did manage to put my player in test mode, however tracking was all over the place due to the ld constantly spining up and slowing down. I did notice a crack in one of the gears on the laser assembly last night and used super glue to fix it. When I powered up the player this morning, lds would not spin at all. The laser was moving fine, but would not indicate a disc, even though I could see the lasers dot on startup. Here is the video of the player in test mode. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAjIdkoqBgs

Was it the white plastic rail?

I'm not sure if this is coming from the power supply or focus servo path or neither. Given that it has slowly gotten worse, I'd probably check the three focus amps (IC603, IC606, IC607) and the capacitors associated with them. This might not be applicable at all, but I guess that is where I would start.

The white plastic rail was cracked in some spots. Thankfully no other gears were cracked around that area. I did check IC603, IC606 and they appear to be fine. I did find 2 caps that appear to be leaking from the bottom near IC607, (C641 and C640). Not sure if this is glue from the factory or just leaking because I found C640 laying on the resistor with the brown substance on it. If I take out the motherboard, would I have to use an oscilloscope when I put the board back in? I also found a little black spring in the back of the machine just loose. Don't know where this spring would go. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

That looks more like glue than leakage. Either way, chip it off. That exact type of glue can become conductive. I've repaired a few non-LD electronics by simply chipping away glue.

If you take out the board, you won't need an oscilloscope. It is the mechanism (what the lens and spindle are attached to) that might require readjusting if you remove.

I'd find out where that spring belongs first. You can check the service manual here. Then chip away any suspicious glue and see if it comes back to life before attempting to remove the board.

I did find out where that sping goes. Right next to the laser there is a metal hook that connects the spring to a plastic hook. The plastic hook has broken off. I did clean off the glue as best as i can and got some luck. If i spin the disc by hand on startup, it will spin then stop. https://m.youtube.com/shorts/iQY6s6aTyHA

I can't remember without having one in front of me, but I think that spring is there for the "Radial direction inclination screw".

See adjustment #4 on page 74 of the service manual. https://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pioneer/CLD/CLD-1070/
