Hi, I am trying to repair this used cld, I have this flat/ribbon cable left, it has a strange bend that does not allow the insertion of the lens assembly for the B side, is there a way to "flatten" it?
Inside this cld, i've found a piece of a ld, I don't know if that thing caused the problem...

Can you be more specific on why you feel this bend is preventing the unit from flipping to B side (assuming that is what you mean by "insertion")?

Hi, sometimes the flat cable it gets stuck in the middle of the red circle and that bend prevents the mechanism from rotating

Do you have the cable running through the spring retractor mechanism? It should be keeping the cable taut to prevent jam ups like that as the laser moves back and forth.

I think I have found a "solution", I unloaded the spring by one turn to make it less "resistant", and then I removed the flat cable from the guide-support to give it more play and less resistance. Now it seems to work...after some tests, the mechanism rotates without problem, for now...

I'm uncertain of how much tension the spring should have on the retraction unit but it should be taunt enough to keep the ribbon cable from obviously getting jammed up.

Here is an image how the cable should be looped through the retraction unit.

There are two weaks points in this type of mechanism, I call it a design error

Weak point or not, it is what it is.

Second generation Alpha Turn LD players (like yours) had their issues back in the day for the fragility of the auto reverse unit (don’t think it was the retractor itself but something would get pushed out of alignment). They improved it with Gamma Turn (found on 503, 703, 704, 79, 99, and maybe more) but still fragile if rattled hard. Moving on to Epsilon Turn (a U-turn design like on all Sony and Panasonic models), it was way more survivable in shipping but then they had the motor holder issues later on.

In any case, players are getting rare and old so the nature of reliability is always going to be up the air regardless what type of player one obtains. Best thing to do if possible is to buy locally so it doesn’t have to be shipped. That’s the case with all my working units.
