| Post subject: | CLD-A100 problem |
Starting today, I'm having problems with my Pioneer LaserActive CLD-A100. Regardless of what kind of disc that is inside, or even if there is no disc in the tray at all, the player thinks an LD in inside. So I put an LD in it, press play, and the disc spins. The player tries to read the disc for about a minute (the disc slows down, then speeds up, and slows down again, and so on) and stops. Also, I'm not getting any video signal at all. Can somebody help me? |

I wonder if the slow-fast spinning is due to the laser trying to read if the disc is CAV or CLV. Just off the top, it might be your laser pickup. It strikes me that perhaps it is in a mode where it senses a disc that isn't there then cannot read the actual disc. Did you clean it? Anyone else have an idea? |

I filmed a video on the subject: |

I watched that. Is your laser pickup assembly moving along it's track properly? In other words, does it slide back and forth looking for the laserdisc in a search and seek action once the disc is loaded? Are you able to move the laser mechanism manually on its track? Perhaps the assembly is stuck in its position and cannot move. I suspect this may be a problem. |

Here is what is happening. After you put a LD inside the pickup is getting a reflection back to its servo sensors from the disc surface. Once it gets the reflection the controller says a LD is installed and it spins up the LD. Then it starts to read the Table Of Contents (TOC). The Pickup lens will start in the down most extreme and then move up to focus on the disc to read it. The electronics are not able to focus so the lens moves up and taps the LD surface. Then tries again later. This is the taps you are hearing. So either the pickup is going bad or a capacitor in the video RF signal path went bad and is shorting out the RF signal. I've seen both. This is not a cleaning issue. Your laser lens is OK also as what is tapping the LD surface is the white plastic ring around the outer edge of the laser lens. |
