Post subject:  [CLD-99] Calibrating with 12" Test disc and 8" Karaoke

User: cplusplus mentioned in a post that if one had a 12 inch test disc and an 8 inch cheapo, that it would be enough to do whatever calibration is needed. I have the ggv1016 test disc and a number of 8" Karaoke and music discs. Also have an analog scope and function generator if needed.
The player is CLD-99.

I'm all ears!

The first step where you will need a LD is step #7 "Crosstalk and tilt offset adjustment". Frame #115 is the same across GGV1016 and GGV1003 (as referenced in the SM) and GGV1069. If VR607 is reachable with GGV1016 loaded, you are all set. If not, I would put the tray back in and just eject, adjust, check and repeat until 115 looks good.

For steps 8, 9, 10: #15,000 is referenced and is the same across the discs.

11, 12, 13: These are all above the disc, so you're good to go.

I just realized most 8" are probably CLV, and you really need CAV. It might be better just to throw that idea out the window and just work with the minor hassle of having to eject between adjusting. If anything, GGV1016 is better than GGV1069 because you have another vertical bar (115) much further down the disc all the way at 46795. Both should look perfect. Make sure your display settings are the worst possible (i.e. sharpness all the way up, all NR off, etc). Check the inverse as well which is a few frames before/after. This is the type of stuff SM's do not mention.

I also read from the service manuals that players can be calibrated with 8 inch Karaoke LD's (besides GGV1069/GGV1016/GGV1003). My question is: may I just put a non-Karaoke 8 inch CAV LD's for calibration? What are the reasons that 8-inch Karaoke LD's can be used for calibration?

You will need a Pioneer GGV disc or an equivalent Sony/Yamaha/etc disc for the vertical bar pattern to ensure there is no crosstalk.

I made the image below:

Top left shows a clean frame 114.
Top center shows a clean frame 115.
Top right shows a clean frame 116.

Bottom left shows frame 115 with crosstalk from frame 114.
Bottom center shows frame 115 with crosstalk from frames 114 and 116.
Bottom right shows frame 115 with crosstalk from frame 116.

Without three successive frames (114, 115, 116) of the black bar moving from left to center to right, there is no clear way to see how much noise is being picked up from the adjacent tracks (crosstalk).

Crosstalk is generally misunderstood as just being some blatantly visible herringbone pattern at the end of a disc, but slight crosstalk is not clearly evident. It can even be difficult to see with the vertical bar pattern, which is why the display must be set to produce the noisiest picture possible.

Thank you so much for the attachment which clearly explains how crosstalk is calibrated. Out of my curiosity I noticed that the "left-middle-right" bar pattern not only appears in 114-115-116 frames. The pattern also appears several times in the latter part of the disc. My question is why the service manuals only mentions frame 115 for crosstalk adjustment but not refer to the latter frames carrying the same "left-middle-right" pattern?

The adjustments section in SM's provide a minuscule amount of context.

It makes sense to check this pattern at the beginning of the disc because the tilt servo engages further as the disc is read. I do not know why 115 was specifically chosen when there are a couple before it and the picture stop is on 475.
