Hi,

I have an issue with my new Pioneer CLD-150K that I just bought. The laser assembly moves like it should, but the lens itself doesn‘t try to focus. I know that normally whilst trying to find the disc, it should move up and down a few times. It‘s just jittering a bit when turning the machine on or off. Aside from that there is no movement at all.
I tried to look up in the service manual whether there is some kind of motor or spring inside the assembly that can break, but couldn‘t find anything.
The laser itself is still good (I think), because you can see a light inside, the ribbon cable, belts and capacitors look all fine to me (belts are firm, and there is no smell of rotten fish)

Any ideas what it could be? All help is appreciated.

No, nothing that extreme. It just give a miniscule little shudder when turning the machine on or off and the tilt mechanism seems to work normally.

Mainly, I‘m wondering if the problem lies with the assembly or the board. So, could it be that something broke within the laser assembly?

Have you tried to re-seat the ribbon cable for the laser pick-up?

Is there really a laser light shining out of the pick-up? I don't see it in the video.

Yes, it’s there, I just can’t manage to capture it on video.
It‘a little red light, visible when I’m looking from above straight down.

After studying your video more, I now notice the lense barely moving up and down (unless it’s the camera angle playing with my eyes). In any case, I’m not sure of the issue but it could be something on the board that controls that focus movement (maybe a bad cap). Also, if you gently move the lense with your finger (try not to touch the lense), does it seem to have good springy movement?

Yes, I noticed that as well. Aside from when I turn it on or off, it does not move at all.
There is nothing physically blocking the lens movement and when pushed down it moves back into position on its own.
Do you know which cap could have gone bad? They all seem to be fine to me and I can‘t smell anything either.
I thought maybe the soldering points on the pickup have gone cold.
I saw in the service manual, that there is something called “focus drive”, so I concentrated on that part and all connections to it. Unfortunatly I don‘t have the necessary tools to check if that parts is reached by the electric current. That it twitches when turned on or off seems to indicate that it‘s at least not completely cut off.

Just had another thought….

Check for cold solder joints, bad traces along the boards, and the ribbon cables for breaks where the laser pick-up ribbon cables travel through including the turn mechanism and then to the main board. Pay particular attention to Pins 4 (Focus Return) and Pin 5 (Focus Drive).

Yes, thats exactly what I meant in my last post.
The cable is in really good condition, but the solder joints were the next thing I would have tried anyway.

Bad traces too….

See what happened to my CLD-97 remote control board…..

Look for deterioration like that. If you find it, they can usually be fixed by jumping them.

So, I tried to retrace the Focus servo loop indicated in the service manual and everything looks fine. I also found the semiconductors called Focus Driver. Could they be broken?

Very possible that can go bad.

If you have a voltmeter, place it in continuity mode and see if when you touch each of the three legs that there is no beep. If you get a beep, that means there is a short between one or more of the legs and the part needs to be replaced.

There can be electrical faults where the focus coils will burn up. You need to determine if the pickup is toast, or if something has failed in the focus path.

So, I think I made it worse.

I bought a Multimeter for measureing currence and so on and tried to see if the focus drive and focus return were recieving any electricity. First I tried to measure it on the laser pickup itself, but it moved to much.
So next I tried the semiconductor posted above. (Or I thought I did and realised now that I tested the one next to it). I did what @ldfan suggested last. But while I did that I connected two legs of one of the semiconductors on accident. Well the result was: The Focus moved once, and now the motor of the tray does not work anymore.

So, did I cause a short cut? What does the motor of the tray have to do with the Focus Drive? The Focus moved for the first time, so the fault lies on the board, probably? And the most important question: Can I fix the motor of the tray?

EDIT: The motor that moves the laserpickup back and forth also doesn‘t work anymore. There has to some component that moves all the parts and is independent from all the rest. The player itself turns on and off normally, all buttons work and all lights are on.
Could it be that the semiconductor I shortcutted is toast and responsable for that? (And maybe it already was a bit wonky, because the focus drive did not work?)

Yes, there was a short. With the player unplugged, check IC201 in power supply for continuity. Might as well check IC202, IC206 too.

Yeah, it beebs everywhere. And I mean, the player turns on and of normally. The display works, you can press buttons and it reacts, so the short can‘t be in the power supply directly.

The semiconductor I shorted out is Q815. Any information about that? Its the black one in the lower left hand corner on the foto I posted

They run off different power supplies. What you are describing is typical: everything seems fine but nothing is moving mechanically. The hope is fuses or protectors like IC201 catch it. Still, check voltages on longer connector on power supply (the player will need to be powered on):

Q815 (if the bottom black one in the photo) is a 2SD1762, part of tracking drive.

Is there anything specific I should check next? Are all the relevant parts on the SYPS-Board?

EDIT: I checked the cables leading to the various motors. There is no current whatsoever leading to the carriage motor assembly and the loading motor assembly. I also tested continuity there, nothing‘s blocking it.
Others I tested: The one leading to the tilt motor has 4.90 Volt on it, CN102 leading to the SYPS board and then the Spindel motor assembly has also a current. The rest I can‘t reach.

You can see in the service manual that the carriage motor assembly and the loading motor assembly are partly seperate. All the parts in the vicinity also have continuity.
