Post subject:  [CLD-2850] Fixed Stuck in Standby - LD plays but not CD

Spent some time today on another spares or repair Player..its the 2nd 2850 Ive picked up.

Straight away could see it was Stuck in Standby condition.
Replaced C210 and C220 470uF 10V Electrolytic's...back to life.

Lubed rails and Clamp mech....new Loading Belt....some time spent getting the timing right..and it now plays...nice bright FL Display on this one. (also had to take off some super sharp edges from the metal component edges - yet not after it drew blood a couple of times!)

So far seems to play both sides of LD Ok. However CD's...it tries but gives up with 'no disc'

Anyone got ideas for this... could it be centering is out..?

One thing I have not as yet ever attempted is adjusting centering. I assume we are talking about laterally adjusting the Laser assembly mechanically?...is it adjustable in every player ....any guides how to do this?

TIA

This is applicable to the CLD-2850: [CLD-3090][CLD-D701][CLD-D702] Centering

Before adjusting centering, check if gently tilting the mech a slight amount forward or backwards helps while it is trying to read the disc.

Thanks for your input C++

Do you mean lifting the whole player. while reading the disc..I clearly recall a CD player I had once that would only play ok if physically tilted.
Will have a look at this tomorrow.

On a side note..been reading the SM wrt to making service adjustments...it states using an 8 inch Test disc, (or a Karaoke LD for spindle centering adjustment) .. so is it though possible to use my 12 inch test disc instead for all adjustments?...assume I would have to keep removing the disc for most adjustments.

Is it worth me grabbing a non test 8 inch disc for the centering...?

Just the center metal mech. The entire assembly sits on a large spring, and you can tilt it by applying slight pressure to plate above Side B. This is an adjustment not found on later players, outlined in the first part of step four.

For centering, you can use a CD. The adjustment for Side A is horizontal. A scope makes it much easier, but you can do it by ear with tilt on and tracking off. I would check the above first.
