Does anyone have any sort of information about this player? On the surface it looks like white version of the V2800, but it has even fewer front panel controls. I'm guessing it's a Japanese only release as it uses a 9-pin DIN for a serial connector, but apart from that I can't wean any sort of information about the machine online.

Some kind of a late LD-ROM machine, perhaps?

possibly but I wonder if it has any relation to the Pioneer Mac Clone. It is strange that it does not have LaserBarcode on it which some industrial players do.

I wish I had one, I’ve heard they break a lot easier than the 80s industrial models, other than that, I know nothing.

I see it says “compatible Laserdisc player” on it, which, yeah, along with the name does make it seem like it was designed to go with a computer. The DIN for coms making it distinct from LDVs which always had RS232 over DB9.

Says his is for Macs. That DIN does look quite like the ones used for Apple Desktop Bus or printer ports on old Macs but it’s been a long time so I can’t recognize it on site.

"Compatible Laserdisc" was written on most Japanese CLD models. Since there's still baud rate settings on back, it's a Mac Serial port (DIN-8) not ADB.

Wonder if you can use a north american mac with it. That would be cool but I don't have an older mac with the serial port anymore. It would be nice for the future though.

I'm imagining this originally came with it's own software, and I can't even imagine how hard that that would be to find. Japanese PC software of old seems to have a a reputation of being incredibly elusive, and proprietary software of any kind, in any region, tends to end up like that as well, unless the hardware it's intended for is popular enough to encourage archival projects by fans.

You can make 80x80 videos of LDs with all sorts of crap now...although I wouldn’t be surprised if resolutions that low are no longer supported by modern QuickTime.
