Hi everybody. I got a CLD-E2000 in the mail not too long ago and whenever it tries to play a disc, it gets this AWFUL squeal after a couple seconds. I managed to get it to play Star Wars once, but no luck since then. Might be shipping damage, but unsure. Anyone know what could cause this, or if it's fixable? Thanks!!

Can you confirm or not if a CD will play properly on the player and if so does it also squeal?

Either way, the squeal is most likely a dirty or worn out rubber grip ring on the spindle platform as noted in this pic....

I would try to clean it first w/ a cotton swab dipped in alcohol to see if cleaning it up (rubber part only) will bring back some grip (the squeal is basically the player trying to spin up or brake the disc and it can't so it slips). If that doesn't work, you probably need to replace the ring. You can find a replacement here.....

Hope this helps.

It’s either that or the entire spindle is junk.

A bad spindle is a possibility too. A good test would be how it plays a CD. If no squeal, I would feel it's a better chance of the grip ring.

Seems to work fine on a CD I had lying around. No dice with the alcohol swab, so praying a new grip ring will fix it. Thanks, guys!!

If it has trouble first starting up or at any point in CAV movies then it may be the grip ring. If it howls in the middle of a CLV movie it’s the spindle bearing.

These older models rarely have grip ring issues, this sounds like a motor bearing.
