Hello, I have been a long time lurker but finally have a question I was hoping the forum could help answer.

I have a CLD-D505 that is having power issues.

A few months back our house had a consistent over-voltage condition from the power company and was getting 140v on both legs for half a day before I was able to shut the house down. Several small power transformers around the house blew (phone chargers, furnace main board, etc). I noticed the laserdisc player wasn't coming on as well and I believe the issue is the T101 transformer in the power supply. After probing around, there is +/- 46v DC after the D101 rectifier up to the primary side of the transformer but nothing on the secondary side.

The D105 arc suppressor diode was removed prior to me owning the machine and the fuse is good.

I know this is a switching power supply (that I barely have a grasp on) and there may be other components I'm not considering but is there anywhere to source a replacement transformer for this board? I've googled the numbers on the transformer (OM-95067 and 1L6409A) but didn't come up with anything. I have looked for a schematic sheet as well but also came up with nothing.

Would I be better off trying to find a whole power supply? The player was working great before the incident so I would hate to scrap it!

Thanks,

Nick

I do not know how a '505 differs from a CLD-D504, but it may be worth downloading the service manual for the '504 and then comparing its PS with yours. You could also do the same with the CLD-D604 and CLD-D606 models, other USA machines from the same era. (I did find out that a CLD-D503 uses the same PS as my CLD-D704 if I remember right, but my CLD-D504 PS is different.)

I would not be so quick to assume the transformer is bad, especially when you do not have a lot of experience with that type of supply. You could, of course, unsolder the part from the board and measure its windings if you are confident (or become confident) of its internal wiring. I wish you success.

If you cannot find that part but you do find that another model used the same PS, your next plan may be to watch for a physically-damaged '505 or any other models with the same supply, for sale. There are many discussions or warnings here about shipping and damaging laser disc players, so potentially a broken one will appear sooner or later.

Always check the little 1uf capacitor next to the large one in the power supply, if it is bad the power supply will not start up as that generates a startup pulse. Otherwise you need to start looking at the different parts, I've also had the optic coupler go bad that bridges the sample level signal between the primary and secondary.
