Good luck with that. Hope you get it resolved and by all means let us know what the issue was :).

I will post the results. Kurtis already has a couple of ideas that I cannot do myself so it will be interesting to see what is causing the issue. I figure it is dead anyway so why not get it checked out. Good clean working players are getting harder and harder to find and I know my player is really clean and low hours so it is worth it to me to get it checked out. Hopefully something simple. Boxed it up today and going out tomorrow.

Ok, here is an update on my CLD-79. I sent it off to Kurtis so he could check it out and see what was up. Before I sent it we exchanged a couple of messages back and forth and after he read what I had already tried his thoughts were this.

“There is a capacitor C493 on the mainboard that sometimes fails, it usually takes the IC protector out also IC410. When it does CD's will play but LD's won't. It happens a lot on the CLD-D704 but the CLD79 and 99 are the same family and can have the same error. You can find IC410 and measure but sides, it looks like a 2 pin transistor, But pins should read the same.
If you have experience soldering you could remove the boards and replace these and see if it then works.”

I knew I couldn’t do this type of work so I sent my player off to an expert. After Kurtis received the player and tested it he found the problem was exactly what he said above. He made the necessary repairs and says the player works fine now and has a very nice picture. He boxed it up and it is on the way back to me as of today.

I am very pleased dealing with Kurtis and thank him for his help. Shipping the unit both ways was expensive but overall the repairs were very reasonable and for me all of it was worth it. I will have my original low hour player back and working.

Just thought I would update this thread just in case something similar pops up for somebody else and this all might help them.

I would never have thought that to be an issue. Great you got it fixed and now have two 79's to share the load of your viewing.

Good information to have on the cap since I do own four players w/ the same style chassis.
