So I picked up a broken CLD-D701 a few days ago and have gotten it from a state of not even spinning the disc, to one where it plays and displays video (badly of course) with no sound other then occasional popping. I have suspicions one of the last owners was a smoker because the outside case was slightly sticky when I got it and inside all the grease had turned a yellow brownish hue. But surprisingly by simply freeing the spindle (which was frozen solid) the player has come back to life. Even the side changing works (and I of course cleaned the outside). I got some lithium grease and light machine oil today along with a replacement belt being on the way in the mail. But before I do anything is there a general guide I can maybe follow? I have the service manual and am experienced with technical mechanical systems. But still I don't really know where to start. I'm new to the hobby and just looking for a kick in the right direction. Watched quite a few videos over the past few months before finally deciding to dive in with the hobby. But I still wouldn't say I'm completely confident.

There's all kinds of crosstalk in the video and again the audio consist of popping noises. But mechanically at least it seems to function. Though I'm sure the spindle even after being freed isn't long for this world if it doesn't loosen up more and could be the cause of the majority of playback problems. I still have some more testing I want to do and I should have taken some pictures of the inside when I had it opened. But right now I'm just looking for some tips from more experienced people on where to start. Oh and I should mention I don't have a remote. I can't do a whole lot of testing that doesn't involve the front panel. Could any pioneer LD remote from the time period work or do I need the right specific model for this machine?
