I am planning to check Pioneer CLD-D702 in person.

What are the things I should be checking in this unit? Are there are obvious/common pitfalls that can be uncovered right away?

Thank you!

The usual.

Bring a CD and both CAV and CLV LDs with you.
Even better if you also have a CD Video for completion.

Play them all, skip chapters, check start and end of sides, change sides (A-B-A), try both remote control and front panel buttons, check for weird grinding noises, check that the TOSLINK output has red light.

I'll even add that if you discover that the tray is having trouble opening or gets a squeal sound during loading, this might be your chance to negotiate the price lower if the seller is unaware of the nature regarding loading belts going bad. And yes, you would need to replace the loading belt to fix this type of issue.

This is one of the more typical issues w/ all Pioneer players from the early 90's and later. Other than that, the 702 is very robust player in all other aspects. Just don't ship it ever.

Thank you for great advice!

I am definitely trying to avoid shipping, I read that with all delicate parts and calibration it's not a great idea. That's why I search locally, although local listings are scarce.

Unfortunately nothing happened, when I said that I'd like to test the player seller stopped communicating. I guess there were issues with the unit and I saved myself time from driving there and finding out there were problems.

That's too bad. However, I would stay vigilant for another posting of the same player. It's possible the seller is contemplating his options and might re-post @ a lower price. Could be your chance to get a 702 in great condition but may likely just need a new loading belt. :shh:
