Assuming that you never really messed w/ gear alignment in respect that you actually removed them from the player (just removed the tray), the only issue left is a stretched belt not providing enough torque. Try cleaning the belt and the wheels that it touches w/ a swab + alcohol, let it dry, and then retest. If the unit starts to work better, you can leave it @ that but in reality it's a short term fix and you'll still need a new belt. BTW.... in case this is still necessary; a pic of the loading gears on a CLD-D701 in the open position...

Quick question, what position is the tall gear that pulls the tray in at in the open position?

This is not my picture but judging it I believe the gears are in the open position. Note a notch in the gear in about the 4 - 5 o'clock position

Turns out that I damaged this gear myself during a mod job I was doing w/ my CLD-M90 some time ago (just had to mistakenly re-install the clamper incorrectly ). Anyway, the part number is VNL-1326 (Two Stair Gear) and was used on all the "3rd generation" Alpha Turn and M Series LD players. I don't have a spare to provide but here is a partial list of a number of models that used it (US models only).
