My cld-1030 which I use regularly was working fine. The other day I tried a LD I got that day. When the disc loaded, it started to spin, but the speed seemed to go up and down, so I ejected the disc and re-loaded it and it played but some very faint wavy lines, so I re-loaded again and played fine. I though maybe it was the disc, but later that day it did the same (speed up and slow down) on another disc and re-loading worked.

I've played discs after and no problems. Today I tried that first disc, and the speed was adjusting, which after about 10 seconds it started to play, but had the faint wavy lines which disappeared after about a min playing into it. Re-loading it played fine (no wavy lines) and I've played a more discs after with no problems.

I don't think it's disc slippage as I put a new rubber on the motor spindle about a year ago.(unless it needs to be cleaned) And the motor that slides the laser back and forth, I also replaced aout the same time.

Any ideas?

Sounds like the motor speed is having issues trying to sync to video rates. Do CD's play OK? This is usually a motor or power supply issue.

I tried the disc today, and was the same sync speed issue. After re-loading it worked fine. Tried a CD and CDV and worked fine.

So it seems it's just the initial startup after the player has been sitting a bit. So tomorrow after it sits all night I will try a CD first to see and post what happens.

Vinlcollector, I pulled out my service manuals on the 1030 and adjustments, my theory is there is a faulty capacitor in that section as it has to sit for a period of time also as you stated. I have been looking through the manual on the sections this occurs and the nearest caps that would be the probable causes.

Please keep us updated on yours, usually 12 to 15 years is the life of a Electro. Cap depending on quality. I look, I don't have a 1030 in stock, just the 1 3030 which hasn't produce no problems. I have come across a cld95 that did the same thing also a few years back. I use a B&K cap checker that checks them incline on the board.

Thank's for everyones input

Today I tried a CD first and it played fine. Then I tried that LD disc, and the same issue came. I tried another LD and worked ok, but listening I can tell the speed was not quite as instant as it should be.

So I tried that problematic LD in my other 3 LD players without hooking them up and I could hear no speed issues, and went right to first chapter. So as said probably the capacitors in the power supply are going.

I haven't opened my 1030 up yet, but is there any way to tell by looking which capacitor is going? without having someone test them?

As we say......good to have a backup player.

others can help more than i can with this.
there are ways to test but i was always told when fixing my arcade monitors that you should replace
all caps to that area so there are no faulty ones in the future.

if it's the power there should be no more than 10 i'm guessing. and no more than 10 bucks.
but again others will be able to answer this one better that actually do repair LD players.

The power for the spindle motor comes from the power supply, the logic board only sends logic pulses to control the power supply. So if you want to replace caps look at the power supply ones.

Well just an update. I had my player apart. None of the power supply caps were heating or smelling. I oiled the rod the laser slides on and cleaned the rubber mat on the motor spindle. Right now it's only 2 discs that really have that problem. I have played lots of my other LD perfectly fine (even after player sitting)

I have now received some details.

Edit
Basically the laser gets stuck on some discs, and would have to change a resistor. Similar like the Pioneer 3090 having problems playing some Technidisc pressings. I'm pretty sure the laser is not out of alignment. This player came from someone who worked at an audiophile electronics store where they got it from new.

it's only a 1 dollar part.
if you know that's the problem.
but to me it sounds like it might need alignment?

If it is only certain LDs and always the same place I would also say it needs an alignment.
