First, thanks to Kurtis for all of the free & helpful advice as I tried getting my CLD-95 back up and running. I thought I would move this to the lddb forums since a lot of experts (including Kurtis) post here, and I just discovered this place as I'm getting back into Laserdisc after a long hiatus...

I received a CLD-95 that was badly damaged in shipping. The clamping assembly was collapsed in 2 places, and some gears were broken on the inside of the laser/carriage assembly. The unit still powered on, the front panel still lit up, and the tray still ejected. I fixed the clamping assembly pretty quickly, then worked on the gears inside the laser/carriage assembly (using a CLD-2080 that I also received badly damaged in shipping for parts...)

To do the repair, I:
-Partially removed the "HDTV assembly" board to get access at the rest of the unit
-Removed the upper track for b-side play
-Removed the pre-amplifier top board
-Removed the flexible cable from the pre-amplifier bottom board
-Removed the laser (carriage?) assembly by moving it to rotating piece in the back, hitting the button/switch to allow it to rotate, then rolled it off the bar where the upper track would've connected
-Replaced the gears
-Re-assembled

After reassembling, the laser/carriage assembly moves along the track when the unit is powered on, but the front panel no longer comes on and I can no longer open the tray using the control panel. In reassembling, I've tried an alternate laser/carriage assembly & flexible cable, but the results were the same (motor in the laser/carriage assembly is activated when I plug in the unit and hit the power button, and it moves to the center, but the front panel never turns on and I cannot open the tray). I've also tried an alternate pre-amplifier top and bottom board with the same results. I've also checked the HDTV assembly board to see if something might have come loose while bending it over the side, but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Seeing as the front panel used to turn on before I started the repairs, and I used to be able to open the tray using the buttons on the front panel, I'm sure I messed something up, but I don't know what. Could have been static electricity too, I suppose.

Any ideas? Or, anyone have an LD-S2 to sell to take my mind off this poor broken player? :)

The problem is the power to the front panel. I still think there is a cable that came unplugged that you have not found.

get that player working, it's a really great one if you have a bunch of LDs.

It looks like there are 2 cables going from the sysps (power supply) board to the main board. The connectors on the sysps side are actually tucked under the cable that goes to the spindle, but I think they're ok, and it's not in an area I was messing with. The connectors on the main board are in plain view and seem to be tightly connected. The main board must be getting some power, because the main board connects to the preamplifier boards, which connect to the laser, which moves when I power on. It looks like the main board also has a connection going to the FL (front panel) main board that should carry power to it, it appears to be connected, and it's not even in an area I was messing with... so I'm just stumped right now.

Is there anything else that could cause 1 part of the system to power on, but not others? I notice a number of fuses on the sysps board, not sure if I could've blown one...

I've got a small collection at home... and I've got a few hundred sitting in my Tokyo warehouse (Mother In Law's house)... I just discovered suruga-ya. :)

At this point though? I've learned a lot in this process, which is good... but I hate losing to this laserdisc player!

There should be at least two cables going to the front panel, one power and one signals. Then if there are multiple boards on the front they have ribbon cables connecting them. I'm not at home to look at my service manual

You're correct - I looked back through the service manual, and there's a connection from the SYSPS board to the IRKB board (the power button on this board works, at least - I haven't tried the remote, but could), to the FLMB board, and then to the MAIN board. The cables connecting these boards appear to be seated properly (this was actually the first time I removed the front panel.

Can someone tell me if the main power transformer for cld95 is vtt1075 or vtt1077? I need to find a replacement for my ld-X1 aka lds2. If not could you tell me the secondary voltage on the transformer winding so that I could get a similar replacement.

Closest thing to the S2/X1 is the X0. The S2/X1 is a unique design.
