First, thanks to Kurtis for all of the free & helpful advice as I tried getting my CLD-95 back up and running. I thought I would move this to the lddb forums since a lot of experts (including Kurtis) post here, and I just discovered this place as I'm getting back into Laserdisc after a long hiatus...
I received a CLD-95 that was badly damaged in shipping. The clamping assembly was collapsed in 2 places, and some gears were broken on the inside of the laser/carriage assembly. The unit still powered on, the front panel still lit up, and the tray still ejected. I fixed the clamping assembly pretty quickly, then worked on the gears inside the laser/carriage assembly (using a CLD-2080 that I also received badly damaged in shipping for parts...)
To do the repair, I:
-Partially removed the "HDTV assembly" board to get access at the rest of the unit
-Removed the upper track for b-side play
-Removed the pre-amplifier top board
-Removed the flexible cable from the pre-amplifier bottom board
-Removed the laser (carriage?) assembly by moving it to rotating piece in the back, hitting the button/switch to allow it to rotate, then rolled it off the bar where the upper track would've connected
-Replaced the gears
-Re-assembled
After reassembling, the laser/carriage assembly moves along the track when the unit is powered on, but the front panel no longer comes on and I can no longer open the tray using the control panel. In reassembling, I've tried an alternate laser/carriage assembly & flexible cable, but the results were the same (motor in the laser/carriage assembly is activated when I plug in the unit and hit the power button, and it moves to the center, but the front panel never turns on and I cannot open the tray). I've also tried an alternate pre-amplifier top and bottom board with the same results. I've also checked the HDTV assembly board to see if something might have come loose while bending it over the side, but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. Seeing as the front panel used to turn on before I started the repairs, and I used to be able to open the tray using the buttons on the front panel, I'm sure I messed something up, but I don't know what. Could have been static electricity too, I suppose.
Any ideas? Or, anyone have an LD-S2 to sell to take my mind off this poor broken player?
