Post subject:  The CLD-R7G and voltage converters in the US

Hi everyone,

So, I have a CLD-R7G on its way to the US, and since it is a Japanese player, the first thing that came to mind was whether a voltage converter would be necessary for it...and after digging through posts on the forum, I'm getting mixed signals. The two prevailing schools of logic are that it is either better to use one, since it is better to be safe than sorry, or that it is entirely unnecessary and that a cheap converter could potentially do more harm than good.

What I am wondering, though, is has anyone had problems with the R7G using standard wall power (running it through a surge protector) in the US, or vice versa (i.e. has a person experienced having their player toasted by a voltage converter)?

Thanks

I had an R7G and never used a step down converter here in the US.

If you open up the bonnet and check the power supply board, it will more than likely be a 120v 50/60Hz power supply, which is US current . . .

. . . so using a step down converter might actually be WORSE for the player.

Interesting, thanks for the information. I'll have to check it when it arrives, though I imagine the parts used for the unit were pretty well standardized, including the power supply board, so it should be the same.

Yep. Many of the parts are the same as in the D406, D604 etc. so it's a safe yet decent player to own.

I think actually it is quite common that japanese LD players have US power supplies inside. Seen it my self once on another player. Said 100V on the outside, but the PCB had 120V printed on it.

I've used a US transformer for my japanese equipment for years without issues. Just recently decided I should spend the money needed to buy a custom made transformer for 100V.

So running 100V on these players might actually be bad even if it says 100V at the back of the chassis?
Pioneer are sometimes vague based on the information given. In fact, the service manual for the CLD-97 gives somewhat of an impression that it supports both frequencies when reading the schematics, but in the technical information it says NTSC 60hz only.
