Post subject:  [CLD-3030] Color drop outs?

After the recent debacle of getting the CLD-3030 to work properly due to stripped gears I can finally enjoy the player. The only real issue I'm having is some discs that have rot or may have some dirt smudges can causes color dropouts in those problem spots.

According to this thread and post, http://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?p=27435#p27435, Color drop outs were at least common on some older players. I am wondering if the CLD-3030 is among them.

I did a test of a disc I can reliably make it happen in the same spot every time and noted the time. Went to a known good disc and tested the same area and no drop outs so I think I can rule out the ribbon cable for the laser pickup (which I initially feared) or a capacitor since the one film it will happen in the same spot, same time, every time.

The problem disc (and there a couple of other earlier titles I have that have some form of rot here and there... mostly CBS FOX P&S 80s stuff) does exhibit the same form of rot and speckles in my CLD-D503 and CLD-D505 players but no drop outs. In fact, I was unaware of it being a problem at all until I got the older player.

Forgot to mention I am using CRT TVs. So we can rule out LCDs with signal sensitivity issues. I also tested the RF out originally on one set that only has RF out and later on another set with composite out, different cables, etc. So any possibility of bad cables or TV signal sensitivity issues can be ignored as well.

could be something thrown out of alignment, after all, your player did evidently take some real abuse in shipping.

my own 3030 arrived FED-EXed around X-mas 2007 or so, from a CALIFORNIA seller.
fired to up first time, and the CD/LD/CDV brackets along left side of the FLD flashed continuously,
and the player was completely unresponsive, wouldn't even expel the disc tray.

opened it up, and found that the laser sled had popped free from it's mounting on the brass worm drive shaft.
pressed it back home, and the player worked just fine, save for occasional seize up at the outer extremities of the pick-up's travel.

never could ascertain what was causing this, perhaps tiring laser,
or perhaps something got thrown out of alignment in shipping there, i dunno.

all i DO know is that a few years back i obtained a very lightly used one-owner CLD-1030,
and transplanted it's identical transport mechanism into the 3030,
going through the trouble in the process of a total teardown and refit of the 3030 chassis,
thoroughly cleaning an re-lubricating everything that required it along the way.
ever since, my 3030 has performed with utterly reliable aplomb...

I didn't see anything obvious inside the tray being out of alignment... but I suppose a closer look is warranted.

Anyone (ie grasshopper) know where to start checking?

I took it all apart and looked around and nothing funny going on where the pickup assembly seats. First, I cleaned the laser with a cotton swab then I went ahead and marked each adjustment potentiometer on the bottom PCB and tried making adjustments, including the hidden "RF Gain" pot that requires the larger board to be removed to see. The only difference adjusting them did was either make the laser work harder (I could physically hear it) or drop out completely so I reset them to their original positions.

I also tried wiggling the ribbon cable around a little bit and no change. So, I guess the laser assembly either was damaged in shipment or is just very tired and has problems with dropping out colours on non-perfect discs. To be clear, the colour drop outs turn into a sepia tone. Similar to when an S-Video cable has some wire fray or isn't properly connected.

Considering it only happens for a few moments here and there and it's intended to be backup player I suppose I can live with it until I source another CLD-3030.

Unless of course, another veteran around here can guide me in a direction to fully verify that is indeed the laser. It's pretty much out of my league now at this point.

Bump. Still looking for advice on this. Do you guys think it may just be the laser or something else? Not really sure how to diagnose this beyond what I've established in the thread.
