Welcome to the forum! :)
I'm not sure if I understand the problem based on the little detailed information given.
Did the player work before the modification?
If the player spits the disc out, there's got to be a problem with the loading mechanism, clamping the disc or the loading belt or something in particular.
Is the player able to recognize the disc?

Seems like there could be a mechanical fault then, since your player recognize the disc.
How about PAL-laserdiscs, do they play as normal?
Did you do the modification by yourself and can you be sure that everything went smooth?
If so, next step in the troubleshooting is to replace the loading belt and that shouldn't be a complicated task. Over the years, the belt(s) can loose its tension and won't operate as expected.

Here I give you a link to Pioneer loading belts that suits your player.
Please note they are aftermarket and not genuine belts, so it could be small variations in sizes.

looks like a variation on the 1990 entry level CLD-980/-1080 series chassis.
some sort of in-between model that never saw a U.S. variant...

It might be that your player cannot play an ntsc formatted disc. The service manual for the 1500 days to refer to same for the 1400. The 1400 is the PAL only version of the CLD1450. I cannot say this for sure as I can't find any definite source to say either way but it seems that the 1500 is the European version of the 1400.

This player was a series of three players that were only available in Europe. The three models were the CLD-1400, the CLD-1450 and the CLD-1500. All three models share the same service manual. Naturally the CLD-1450 can do both PAL and NTSC, although it performs best with PAL discs unless the simple mod is performed to ouput pure NTSC instead of the funky pseudo-PAL that was factory standard. This player was indeed also available in the US as the NTSC only CLD-1070 and is identical to the three European models, with the exception of an extra button on the remote control to toggle between analog and digital sound. Ironically the CLD-1450, which is NTSC friendly has this button removed like its two brothers in the PAL series, which makes it impossible to select the analog tracks unless a hack is done to the remote control!!!

What is important to understand is that the CLD-1500 was marketed as a PAL only player, and it does that well. The fact that some of them could play NTSC discs was obviously due to the fact that some had used the same boards as the CLD-1450 internally. In my CLD-1500 the NTSC components are missing so it would be impossible for me to use my player to view NTSC discs. The article you read on the UK discussing the NTSC mod for the CLD-1500 specifically states that it will not work with all CLD-1500 players! The article starts out by saying that before you do the mod you should put a NTSC disc in first to see if it will play. If it does not then there is no need to carry out the mod since it will not work!

does one even need to "hack" the original remote? can't one simply obtain any old PIONEER LDP remote with that function online?
i mean, the choices seem plentiful enough, since the remote function in question seemed to be one of the common basic functions
to be found among the vast majority of PIONEER LDPs marketed in the U.S. and Japan...

No, of course you don't need to hack it. You could just replace it with a Universal type or just get a hold of any of the Pioneer remotes that have this button for the analog/digital audio switching.

Hello! My Pioneer CLD-1500 reads NTSC disks, but the image is naturally black and white. I made a modification with the switch, as in the instructions, but nothing changes when switching. The image remains black and white in both positions of the switch. What could be the reason? Thanks.
