You're both missing my point.

My 99 is virtually noiseless.

A 97 is waAaaasssaasy better.

The 959, supposedly identical to the 97, in the picture looks pretty noisy, and that's the topic of the thread so I'll take it I'm not alone in thinking this.

The problem: based on these facts the pictures shown should look much better. Since they stink then there is "something wrong" with the player. If it looks worse than a 99 then it's messed up, right?

And btw, yes of course I have all the DNR on (Y standard, chroma maxed, sharpness 0) and it looks amazing to me. It also goes through a JVC DVD recorder that scrubs it even more.

Does this look terrible or something?

No it's not noiseless until you crank the chroma NR all the way up and remove the noise (and a good bit of detail with it). Please stop hijacking my thread, you are mistaken, misinformed or both. And this player in particular took a beating in shipping, I had to basically glue it back together so yes it is very likely this one is not representative of all 97s.

Do you realize the 99 internally is a CLD-503 with one additional board? You can say you prefer the 99 over the 97 (assuming you have spent time with both), but what you can't say is the 99 is anywhere near the 97 as far as video noise goes...

You're really hung up on the 99. I never once said I prefered it to the 97. I would gladly use a 97 but I've never found a good deal on one. Let's just say the 99 is a complete piece of crap. The worst player ever make. That would make my statement even more clear; yes, your 959 is jacked up if it looks worse than my garbage 99. THIS ISNT HIGHJACKING YOUR THREAD. IT DIRECTLY RESPONDS TO IT. If you can't handle someone simply saying, "Yes, something is wrong judging by these shots and what I've seen of LD players." then change the name of the thread, which currently is:

"Is CLD-959 (97) this noisy or is something wrong??"

There is no need to get all up in my grill over Laserdisc stuff. Yes, I know a 99 is a lot like a 503. I own and have repaired both players. That's would be why I said "The mechanics of the 99 are identical to any other mid range Pioneer apart from stuff that doesn't matter, like the copper case or the gold plated jacks." There was no reason whatsoever to accuse me of highjacking your thread, or to call me misinformed or defensive. Go back to bathing in scads of high end LD players. I won't darken your doorstop again with attempts to answer questions you already know the answers to.

You are answering by comparing two different players, sorry it doesn't make sense.

After lots of adjustment I figured out this was a calibration issue, I am horrible with colors so I had things way off, with the help of video essentials and my wife my colors are correct and video noise is gone.

If you're adjusting the color management system, avoid any changes to secondaries. If primaries and white balance are correct the secondaries should be correct just "by themselves". Otherwise it will cause banding or other artifacts.
