I'm new to LD (finally couldn't withstand the temptation ;-) ) , and got myseld a CLD-1750 . The only problem is that the spdif output isnt working. When i look in the chassis part there is no red light shining as it normally would in an spdif output socket. Would this be a defect or is there something i do wrong? (need to change some kind of switch ??)

Does the disc(s) you've been using also have a digital audio track? It won't output the analog audio tracks through optical.

I have tested multiple discs with various audio formats. The cld-1750 outputs the analog tracks through the analog output. That part is working. Now with discs with a digital audio track the red "Digital Sound" light lights up, but nothing over the spdif output. When the digital sound light is visible, im not sure what is been outputted through the analog output: the analog track or the digital track converted through the onboard da converter.

If i got i right, it should be as follows;
-analog sound: only outputted through analog output, not digitized and then outputted through spdif optical
-digital pcm sound: outputted through spdif port or converted wit onboard dac and then outputted through analog output
-digital ac-3 sound: stored on analog sound track in fm modulated form, outputted through "ac-3 rf port", when such a port is available on the player. An external demodulator is needed.
-digital dts sound: stored on the digital audio track, where pcm normally is stored. Outputted through spdif port.

I do have to mention that i do not have the original remote controller for the cld-1750. I was able to buy the cu-cld023 remote. This works, but maybe i'm missing some special buttons from the original remote?

I checked the documentation quickly:

But as long as the "Digital Audio" sign is on from the front display, you should be getting sound via the digital out TOSLINK...

Perhaps the little LED died after only a few trillion cycles.

I'm thinking the same or similar (like problem with the circuit powering it). I thought that the red led light would always be visible at the spdif output so long as the unit was powered up?

This is exactly what i was thinking, i never saw a device with spdif out actually switching the port on and of, only the actual data transfer is switched on or off.

I guess the inevitable has presented itself: recap the player and check for electronic and mechanical failures, replacing rubber transport belts etc.
