Post subject:  [CLD-D604] Loading issues HELP!

Pulled my D604 out of mothballs after reading a forum post. The post claimed that the reason my player wasn't loading, was due to the loading mechanism. When I would load a disc, the tray would close, but I would hear a straining of the motor, until it timed out with a U1 error code (clamping).

When I opened the player and loaded a disc, I found that if I pulled up gently on the loading carriage, it would clamp properly and play just fine. The post claims that I would need to replace the loading belt and lubricate. I bought WD40 Specialist Silicon Spray and sprayed the gears in the loading mechanism. The problem now seems worse.

The tray loads slower and when it is all the way in, it can no longer lift the the carriage. I have been able to lift it into place so it plays, so I haven't killed the player. I cleaned the belt and pulleys of lube with alcohol, to make sure it's gripping.

Is a new belt what I am missing, or have I done more harm than good with the lube?

Yes, this is the belt. What you describe were the exact same thing on my 2950 and replacing the belt solved everything. When you sprayed the lubricant around, some probably got on it and made it even more slippery.

As above poster said there's a chance you got some spray on the belt and pulleys, the belt needs to be absolutely clean in my experience, especially a worn out belt. I tried spraying some of that stuff in one of my players and had the same thing happen, belt seemed to slip even more.

New belt should fix it, I did read somewhere about soaking on old belt in ammonia to make it shrink a little, could be something to do while you're waiting, but I can't say if it works.

But really just buy a new belt, they are cheap enough and one of the few parts still available, thankfully.

For grease there's the special type for electronics, white silicone I believe, but I'd avoid using spray again as I had bad results also.
I'd say if there is grease there that's not dry or crusted just leave it be.

Thanks smaron and sjoerg!! Glad to know I didn't nuke my player. Any advice for cleaning the gears?

Again, THANKS!

Hmm, I just give the thing a good *whack*.

After it strains, but before it times out. :)

But seriously, yeah, loader belt.

But, also seriously, the whack works pretty well for a few years until you can get the thing fixed.

You should have only done the belt. You need to remove the gears and clean off the spray and apply the white silicon grease.

I installed the new belt. The tray load seems to load slower. The belt no longer slips, but the carriage now sticks on clamping. I can pull it into place, so it plays still. Silicon grease was recommended, but does anyone know exactly where I put it?

Having this same problem and wondering if anyone can answer the above question. Looking in players before I could usually tell where the grease was so I'd advise the last poster to try that, but can't guarantee that's the best answer. Ordering a new belt and some grease myself right now.

I guess I can answer this question now since I just replaced the belt on my CLD-59 (more or less the Elite version of the 604).

In order to replace the belt, I was surprised that the assembly was buried under the loading tray so I had no choice but to remove it. Since I had never done it before and have screwed up other machines before by removing trays (a Panasonic DVD Changer comes to mind ), I took a picture of the gear assembly in case they needed to be lined up a certain way (it turned out that it did not).

Anyway, after replacing the belt and re-installing the tray, the tray was getting all jammed and would not retract all the way and preventing the transport mechanism from moving properly. After some fidgeting around (and at this point it was tough to move the tray out again so I was concerned about cracking a gear), I finally got it extracted and noticed immediately that I did not have the tray lined-up properly w/ the front of the unit (it was properly in the tracks however). Once I got it aligned, it went in w/o a hitch and everything worked properly again.

And I did not bother to lubricate any of the mechanism since it appeared it did not need it (I've had this unit stored for quite some time and it never had much mileage on it to begin with).
