Hi.

I'm very new to this - i have been a pinball collector for a number of years - and that exposure has made me unafraid of taking something apart and putting it back together. But in relation to LaserDisc players - novice.

I recently took a gamble on a player via ebay, to replace one that I might discuss on another thread to see if it is recoverable.

The CLD-V710 will power on, eject and return of tray is fine. Put in a CD or 8"/12" LD and the lens moves up to the disc and correctly identify the disc type correctly. But if I press play it will spin up - and then spin back down and eject the disc.

My initial thought is maybe it isn't achieving speed or the opto on the drive spindle shutter disc thing is not reading the speed correctly so it stops to prevent issue. BUT other than this I have no idea what might be wrong.

Do you have any thoughts or ideas? Love to be able to watch the small but enjoyable collection of titles we have - hopefully without having to buy a whole new player.

Thanks,

D

What is the error code on the display when it fails to start?

It ALSO fails on CD?

I'm glad you asked - made me go re-check.

LD - play>spin>OPEN

CD - Play>spin>STOP

The on player display just shows a red 0. Neither actually play.

Thanks for the quick reply.

That doesn't sound good at all. When the rotor is aging it's having a hard time playing heavier LD but works fine with CD.
If even CD doesn't work, you might have a laser pickup issue or the player might be DOA.

Anyone else has any idea?

I have seen the spindle motor cause this when really bad as they cannot turn and hold RPM but the higher percentage is a bad laser.

I used to have one of these players (it was destroyed in a fire, no kidding), & should still have the service manual around here, but whether I can ever find it is dubious.
The symptom you are describing sounds like "no focus lock".
Does the laser light? If it does, you should see a bright red spot appear briefly in the lens assembly if you turn the player on, with the cover off & no disc in, in a darkened room. The dot can also be dimly seen through the metallized layer of a CD. If you do see this light from the optical assembly, the next step is to clean the lens. If you don't, it's likely (although not necessarily true) that the laser pickup is dead ― but I have some hope, because in that case it normally wouldn't detect the disc at all, or try to spin up.
