Listen carefully for any slipping between the disc and the spindle motor. If the disc doesn't come up to speed within a certain amount of time the player will shut down. The CLD-99 uses the same rubber "mat" as the CLD-D703 (VEB1237), so replace that if you hear any slipping. You might get some temporary relief by cleaning the mat (I've used packing tape to pull the gunk out of the rubber).

Of course, the newsgroup post above is another possibility, but no RF is a bit harder to fix than a slipping disc :)

That's typically how I get a P5 error sometimes when the label on the disc is a little dusty or dirty and you can hear slippage noise from the Player, usually STOP/PLAY will work at the 2nd time.

But I also got a spare rubber mat in case this starts to happen a little too often.

I found Mitsubishi discs to be among the worst for this slipping. They had a matte finish that was prone to clogging up the rubber "fingers" and compounding the problem on other discs.
