Hey,
Wonder if anyone can help, I fired up my Pioneer CLD-D515 last night for the first time in years. I powered up fine but it goes through the normal power up cycle then trys to eject the main disc tray. After a few attempts it stops and just ejects the CD tray. Then when you power down it will take the cd tray back fine but you get the same motor sound. During all of this the CD and LD buttons are flashing.

I’ve not taken it apart yet to look to see if it was a drive belt issue or something more serious.
Has anybody got any ideas what might be causing it not to eject?

If you want videos of what it’s doing I’m happy to post them
Thanks in advance

Probably just need a new loading belt. Part number VEB-1184. Search ebay for it.

After you get the belt, you will need to retract the LD tray to access the location where the old belt is located (left side toward the front).

To further prove it is the belt, you can still open up the player, try to have the LD tray retracted (would probably need to nudge it a bit), and then check the belt for looseness. Regardless if it is loose feeling, clean the belt with alcohol and after that test it again. It may start working fine but only temporarily.

This is simply a test to prove the belt does need replacing.

VEB1184 is the Pioneer part number for the belt, but the size is SBS3.5. Don't get hung up on trying to find an "official" Pioneer belt.

A few electronic supply companies (& model shops for radio control gear etcetera) sell belts though in the UK we have lost a few over recent years - Maplins among them.

If struggling though on the RS UK site under "Drive Belts & V Belts" they might have something that suits.

Good luck, hope you can spin the big discs on your player soon  .

Cheers.

Thanks guys, going to give it a go at the weekend.
Will let you know if it goes well.

(Update)
Well just taken it apart, did nothing but take the casing off and it started working. So put it all back together and then it started playing up. The tray will eject now and if you put smallest of pressure on the loading try it takes the disc back then it will load. If not then you now get a U1 error code. So will order a new belt off eBay

Possibly you were using the player more lately and exercised the loading belt enough to reduce some of the slipping issues.

A new belt will definitely resolve the U1 issue.

Sorry for a slow reply life got in the way.
So I’ve replaced the drive belt today and it works smoothly. Now the problem is when you put a disc in it picks it up, there’s a wering noise then it spits the disc out and displays “U1” on the front of the machine.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing it.

Thanks for all the good so far guys

It’s still the belt. The same one, I think, if this player is the same as a 503.

EDIT: I checked and the 515 looks more like my 604 which is a generation newer so I don’t know if they have separate belts but on my 503 it’s the same belt. I just went through all this fun last week.

When you replaced the belt, did you also clean the gear assembly to clean off any residue (as well as the belt itself due to finger oils) with alcohol?

The whirring noise you are hearing is most likely slippage of the belt. So cleaning off w/ alcohol should fix the problem. In addition, another cause can be mechanism that raises the spindle motor could need some additional grease.

I just replaced the belt didn’t clean anything. What kind of cleaning alcohol would you recommend?

Kind of update
Was having another look at it this afternoon just incase I did something stupid yesterday everything seems in place will get some alcohol and grease in the week.
I also stumbled on this YouTube video
https://youtu.be/vZe8FG0dp9w
This is the exact same problem I have if it’s any help

I don’t use alcohol on the belt since alcohol dries everything out. I just use dish soap and water. The pulleys themselves I clean with alcohol though and q tips. If you’re into model building and you have those super stiff pointy Tamiya brand a tips those are great.

Then once you get it limber enough to mount discs reliably have it do that over and over again to get things smooth and consistent. Mine wasn’t mounting %100 when I last look it apart but I’ve watched one or two movies on it every day for a week and now it never messes up.

I always felt one swipe of alcohol on the belt wouldn’t dry it up that much so I assume it would be fine. Multiple cleanings with alcohol I would agree would really dry it out. Also, I actually use Intraclean for tape decks as my cleaning solution for belts but good luck finding it anymore since it’s been out of production for quite some time.

In any case, this whirring issue could still be the new belt having a larger diameter than spec or the raising mechanism needing more grease. I also have a whirring issue on my two Denon, LA-3100s’ (CLD-D701 clone) but only when the players have no disc in them and only during start up. I found the issue in my case to be a stronger than usual magnetic clamper that makes the mechanism struggle to separate it from the spindle. After the player warms up and has been playing a disc, it starts to smooth out the rest of the time. But of course, the issue returns after the player sits around unused for a period of time.

Merry Christmas guys, hope you had a good one
Right the saga continues so I’ve cleaned the belt and the drive belt cogs, and the same thing is happening. On closer look at the point everything gets stuck the drive belt seems to loose grip and holding it in place with a q tip/cotton bud will let it run smoothly. It doesn’t need the q tip/cotton bud there to eject
I’ve measured the belt and it’s the right size. Any ideas or is just more cleaning needed or the belt need to be changed again?

Thanks in advance

Have you compared this new belt to the old one to see if the former does have a smaller diameter (assuming you did get a new belt)?

Yeah the belts are the same. I was giving it another go and found that the first drive wheel after the motor was sticking so took it out cleaned it put it back and it’s started to work again.
It’s a little temperamental some heavier discs like Commando won’t load but getting there.
Would more cleaning and greasing help?

You aren't greasing the belt are you???

You never want to grease the belt or pulley where they touch, the belt will slip and won't work.

That’s the problem. Belt is too loose. You need to get a belt with the proper spec diameter. You’re losing torque by continuing to use this oversized belt.

Also, what rein-o said. No grease on the belt/pulley portion although I don't think that is what you did but have to make sure anyway.

It’s working at the moment, just a little tempromental will get a smaller belt than the recommended one for the 515
