Hope somebody can help me here, my 2950 just suddenly stopped reading discs - I expect the pickup has died although If I put the player in test mode and look at the laser lens with a camera I can see the laser light up it's just that the spindle won't start disc rotation which made me think maybe it could be the spindle motor?

There were no real signs of the picture deteriorating before hand, although my wife was watching a film when it stopped working and it was after turning from side A/B

I’m gathering you manual got this laser back on the lower rail (side A read position) and then tried the unit. If it is stuck in the turn mechanism or the turn mechanism side switch is not signaling the processor what side of the disc the pickup is on the unit will stop working.

The unit returned to side A automatically, so it's not mechanical - it just didn't start spinning on side B, i just wonder if it is that it thought the side was blank (e.g. laser died) or the spindle motor didn't stop the disc and start the reverse rotation... Is there a way in test mode to test the spindle motor?

In test mode once a disc is loaded press play and it should spin if a disc was detected. With an oscilloscope you can see pulses being sent to the motor to spin it.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.
