Hi

When I was watch the Abyss yesterday I noticed that the side switch mechanism stopped working. When the disc came to an end nothing happened, no error, no noise. I then opened the tray and selected side B on the remote however that didn't make any difference. So I opened up the player today and I saw that the laser pickup isn't even trying to switch side, the only thing that happens is that the carriage assembly (I thinks that's what it is called) moves up and down a bit. Does anyone know what might cause the issue?

First of all, are you sure you didn't get any error codes like in this thread?
If you can locate the belt, I would replace it even though it may seem fine. Over years it becomes stretched and looses its tension.
This can cause multiple issues.
Check the [Global] thread regarding belts to find the correct replacement. :)

When you put the disc in and it plays, when you hit the B button does it do anything? When you hit Repeat to cycle through all the repeat modes does it only offer side A and not the whole disc? In short, does it seem like the player thinks the disc is one sided?

If so, I’d suspect your grip ring is slipping on startup. When this happens the TOC doesn’t get read properly and some features may not work, switching sides is one of them. Other weird stuff can happen too, like your DTS signal being unusable.

Clean or replace the grip ring.

Thanks a lot! Replacing the grip ring was the solution.
