Post subject:  [CLD-D702] Tray/Gear Issues
I recently had a power supply die on a CLD-D702. I was able to replace it, and now the power works, but because I disassembled it, the tray seems to be having an issue opening and closing. I've removed the tray, tried following the service manual's instructions about lining up the chipped tooth on the roller, but it doesn't seem to be working. I feel like the gears have gone out of alignment in relation to each other. Is there any way to figure out how they go together?

My symptoms are, I put the tray back in, I close it, the tray goes in, the screen keeps saying close and never stops saying close, and then after a while it opens back up again. It's as if it can't tell where the tray actually is. Any ideas on how I can get the tray back into proper alignment?

Try removing the tray again and see if the player operates normally again (without the tray) in respect that it says “close” and then reverts back to the “time” indicator in the front panel.

If it appears normal now, then you just probably need to re-insert the tray again and make sure it’s perfectly straight going back in to its track.

I’ve had an issue like this on my CLD-59 and it’s critical getting the tray perfectly lined up. But of course, my unit has the single CD tray that makes it’s more sensitive for alignment.

Let us know what you find and of course be gentle with it; don’t want to crack gears.

Progress has been made. I was able to fix the tray issue, but now when I try to play a disc or flip to side B, the unit powers off. Any ideas there?

Could be a stretched loading belt but were you having any side change issues or squeal sounds of a slipping belt prior to the power supply going down?

Nah, loading belt is fine. No strange noises. Also, I find I'm able to switch to side B now, but when it tries to play, off it goes.

What exactly did you take apart when you had the power supply fixed? Clamper assembly?

Maybe this is the problem??....

The metal peg needs to be in the plastic slider otherwise it will not clamp properly and thus cause many operational issues.

If not, maybe the door latch is not reconnected properly because I did notice in the video that the door doesn't appear to be moving properly as well.

The metal peg is in and all latches appear to be in the correct positioning.

Sounding more like a gear timing issue now and it’s probably just the tray and door timing appearing to be off. On these Alpha Turn models, the door must open up completely and then the tray begins to move.

I would try removing the tray again and just see how the door moves. If it’s erratic, focus on getting the door working first.

On some of the older models Pioneer has a switch on the back of the front panel that sensed the door being opened or closed. I’d take off the front panel and see if EAD incorporated the switch and it is working properly.

I'm not sure how that would make the unit power off when a disc spins, but thanks.

I based my comment in respect to the video you posted. I noticed the door did some strange quick movement that looked a tad strange to me. However, since you did not show the tray going in and out, I also assumed maybe that was also still an issue.

Anyway, maybe it is still some gearing alignment issue deeper in the player but I wonder how that can happen with just a clamper and tray removal (definitely not the clamper for sure but I guess a tray removal is possible to mess up alignment).
