| Post subject: | [CLD-980] Distorted CD sound |
I have a Pioneer CLD-980 player that distorts or clips the sound from CD's. I have tried different CD's and still get the same thing. The sound from 12" and 8" LD's is normal and sounds good. Now, I normally do not play my CD's on this player as I have 2 CD changers for it. Anyone have any ideas as to why the sound is bad? |

Well, it happened with 2 CD's I tried. To check the CD's, I played them in my Blu-ray player and they sounded normal. The amp is a Sony STR-DE935 which works fine with my CD changers, DVD changer and the Blu-ray player. |

It is either laser pickup centering to the spindle motor or the RF signal is getting a little weak. |

Does it have a d-level control on the remote? It happened to me that it was all cranked up and the cd's sounded distorted. |

Actually, I do not seem to have a remote control for the CLD-980 and I cannot remember if it ever had one. For example, to turn it on you press a switch on the front that remains in. Pressing it again and the switch button comes out and the player turns off. Hence, I don't think it ever had a remote. You see, the player does not do 2-side switching for playback either. You have to do the trot to it to flip the LD. So, to change the d-level with a remote cannot happen. |

The D-Level was not on these older players, D-Level is a digital volume control adjustment so you were lowering the signal as it was too high for the receiver or TV you were plugging it into. The spindle centering is more critical for CD's than LDs so I was wondering about that. Also I can agree that some (actually a lot) CDs are just recorded loud to make them supposedly sound better and make people buy them. Some TV's especially distort as the input signal is too large. |

I agree about a lot of CD's are being recorded at a high signal level. In my CD changers, I have 2 CD's that come to mind that exhibit that behavior. The CD's for Carousel and the 1812 overture have their music recorded at about half the volume of the other CD's. As a result, when those 2 are in a playlist, their volume seems to be barely audible in the quiet passages. I am not going to worry about the clipping of the CD audio coming from the CLD-980 right now. The CLD-980 is a backup LD player for my Sony MDP-600 and will be used for playing any LD's that do not have digital sound. So far, the only LD that I have without digital sound is an 8" Music LD (David Bowie). My Sony LD player works very well for sound as it has an optical output which I feed into my amp. When the Sony LD player plays an LD without digital sound, it stills puts out an optical carrier which my amp perceives as sound and yet there is no sound. My amp is supposed to switch to line level whenever there is no optical signal; but, the Sony LD player keeps the carrier on which prevents the Sony amp from switching to line level audio. Hence the need for the CLD-980 being in my A/V equipment as it has only line level audio output (no optical). |
