I've recently come upon a CLD-91 with a strange problem. I can get it to play analog audio LDs, but with no video. If I play a disc with Digital Audio, I get no audio and the picture I do get looks like I'm trying to play a PAL disc (bad sync, black & white, etc). And on top of that, it won't play a CD. It tries to read the TOC and then stops, blinking "CD" on the display.

I'm guessing a clock is out of sync, but I've not been able to find anything obvious.

Anyone run across this kind of behavior? If I can't fix this, I may junk the innards and put a CLD-3070 in the chassis.

is there any real internal differences between CLD-3070/91/92? some up-specced electronic parts, perhaps?

it would appear that you could readily do a quick front bezel/top bonnet/wood side panel swap with a functional CLD-3070,
as the differences between the three U.S. variants seem completely cosmetic...

Aside from the actual player mechanism, the players are nothing alike on the inside.

Thinking this might be a problem with the playback assembly, I swapped the entire mech out from a working 3070 and the problem remained. This leads me to think it's got to be one of the boards. None of the boards between the 91 and the 3070 are the same, so that really isn't an option.

Sounds like a control issue of sorts. Maybe look in that section to see if any caps are leaking or maybe do a tapping test to see if there are any cold solder joints.

You need to get a schematic and find the point where the RF signal from the laser is splits out the RF signal to the analog audio decoder and follow the signal that goes the other direction to the digital processing. You probably have something like a bad capacitor in the signal path pulling the signal down or lost a voltage in the digital path. This is not a mechanical assembly issue.

Keep us posted.

Always wanted a 91 or 92 but when my wife found out I only have 4 players she almost had a meltdown and wanted me
to get rid of 3 of them

My wife at some point already knew I had 11 players and I said out of the blue that I wished I could get a CLD-97 and within a week or so she finds me one for a decent price and now I have it. Since then, I have added one more after the 97 to make it 13 now.

She understands that I enjoy tinkering but I know I was probably pushing it so I don’t foresee any new additions at this time.
