I have a CLD-D704 that was working fine, played a disc yesterday. But I just tried again and now it doesn't play CDs or LDs.
Loads fine. Sometimes when you press play it starts and opens. Other times it spins up and then gives up and just goes back to start. If I try to switch to the B side it just spins and spins. If I select a chapter and play it just spins. My guess is electronics rather than the usual belt issues. Is it worth repairing or should I just recycle it? If repair, suggestions on where? I'm in California, so shipping to the USA not an issue.

Does that player not come with an AC-3 output, freeze frame & other handy features?

Surely worth getting repaired if viable & there are a few guys who use the forum who may be able to help/advise.

Hope you get the player playing as it should again & good luck.

Cheers

Thanks. What's the recommended cleaning fluid these days. I've found references to Radio Shack head cleaner, but since Radio Shack doesn't exist any longer... There are a lot of different head cleaners on Amazon. I may have some old head cleaner for my reel-to-reel somewhere, but it's old at this point.

Rubber mat (aka grip ring) is not about the head. This is what you need to clean.....

Try alcohol and see if that will work.

Yeah nothing too strong or you will melt it and then won't have any.

You may also need to look for a replacement or do the plasti dip, search it up and you will find info about it.

Thx ldfan

On another note, I've cleaned heads with Vodka, that's what I've read, this is not a head but the grip, you could try that too.
For my tape deck the vodka was perfect and it worked great.

But you do all these repairs at your own risk.

And BTW.... I would never get rid of a 704 unless it was absolutely trashed. They are always worth fixing since they were the high end player in their day (approx MSRP of $1,400 to $1,500).

Since it cannot play a CD you do not have grip ring issues. If it played CD's but had issues with LD's then the grip ring is a definite culprit.

As ldfan stated this machine should not be thrown away. People like me would buy these for parts or to refurbish. If you want a LD player this would be worth looking into getting fixed.

I kind of had doubts about the grip ring as well since there was no mention of a squeal upon start up. So what do you think Kurtis? Maybe alignment, bad pick-up, reseat the ribbon cables on the pick-up, etc.?

I have the main board-set for a D704. What I do not have is the audio board and the front panel board.

If it just quit working and won't play CDs or LDs, I'd look on the main board for a blown resistor or capacitor. This doesn't sound like a mechanical issue.
