I have just purchased a Pioneer CLD-99 Elite but it doesn’t seem to recognise my NTSC discs. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Does it play CDs??

Yes it plays CD’s fine plus accepts other laserdiscs but will reject a few, the tray will open straight after loading

When the ones that work play there’s a whirling and slight knocking noise.

Your player probably needs a belt exchange before anything else is checked for. The part number is VEB1184 if you can get it locally, or check the thread "[CLD-950] Player does not read disc on first insert" in the CLD-section.
