I have just purchased a Pioneer CLD-99 Elite but it doesn’t seem to recognise my NTSC discs. Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Yes it plays CD’s fine plus accepts other laserdiscs but will reject a few, the tray will open straight after loading

When the ones that work play there’s a whirling and slight knocking noise.

Your player probably needs a belt exchange before anything else is checked for. The part number is VEB1184 if you can get it locally, or check the thread "[CLD-950] Player does not read disc on first insert" in the CLD-section. More info there on belt numbers and a link to another thread for sizes.

Highly unlikely if it stepping down to the correct voltage.
