Post subject:  [CLD-S260] Top brace clamp too tight

I'd recently acquired a used Pioneer CLD-S260 (also known as CLD-S2600 in some market). Upon switching on & disc inserted, unfortunately it didn't play. After some trouble shooting, I've found the pressure of the top brace disc clamp appeared to be too tight, retarding the disc driving motor from spinning. After removing the white plastic pressure cup at the top, or removing the top brace altogether; the disc did start to spin & could be read by the machine. However without a secured top clamp, the disc didn't spin smoothly & also making squealing noises.

I recalled seeing some Youtube videos on similar problems, with suggestion on raising the top brace slightly by adding washers onto the brace securing screws. Tried this but to no avail.

Just wonder if anyone has experience on fixing the issue? Or if someone could tell me if the problem was stemmed from the disc driving motor (rising too high or loss of torque, etc.)?

Many thanks in advance.

This is a new one to me. The disc is magnetically clamped with a load of travel available from what I remember, I’d be interested in seeing this explained more.

I've actually heard of this, can't remember if it was from grasshopper or on the forum.
the top bar could be bent, check and fix at your own risk.

I love that there were Japanese techs who designed this stuff and had it made in their country but USA people get it 20-30 years
later to redesign it by adding washers :wtf:

Check this first. Where the cross support "tabs" connect to the chassis with screws. Especially if this has been shipped recently.

I've also had the top bend down due to pressure from poor packaging, I normally open players first as in my case it was bent down enough to put a big scratch in the laserdisc.

Thanks to everyone's input. I have just taken a couple of photos to help explains the issue a bit further.

1. The first photo illustrates there's a white plastic cap on top of the brace plate, secured by twisting its tabs into the brace bar. BTW the brace bar is perfectly flat without any bend or warping.

2. The 2nd photo illustrates the rotating parts of the brace plate after the cap removed.

Test results:

1. With the cap on, the driving motor could not turn & generated some whizzing noise then stopped.

2. With the cap removed, the driving motor might or might not spin, depending on the loosely connected pressure plate. When it does spin the machine might or might not be able to read/play the disc. The spinning also generated abnormal movements as it wasn't controlled properly.

Any further thought on that?

Check if that top bar is bent.

Do you have any drafting tools or carpenter tools, square etc.

Something is bent somewhere or the top parts aren’t installed correctly. Unless there is some way the spindle has slid UP, which I don’t think happens. Usually it’s the opposite.

Unscrew the four screws holding the clamper. Make sure it is perfectly flat. Make sure the back of the chassis is not bowed. When I see bending problems like this, it is very hard to tell by just looking at it.

If that all looks good, feel under the clamper where it meets the spindle to see if it is flat and moves ok. Maybe try disassembling and reassembling it. You can reference the CLD-A100 SM.
