Received a CLD-A100 with a PAC-S10 in it and was told it would not eject. Half of "4 Rack VNL1495" had cracked off (black plastic rail used to move the pickup). I glued this back on and it should not be problematic. When powering the unit on, both the CD and LD lights stay lit and the tray comes out very slowly. I pulled the power supply and found IC202 ICP-N25 was bad (labeled IC but it actually functions more like a fuse). The PAC-S10 in it has leaky capacitors. Almost all of them are surface mount and there are a ton. Could this PAC have caused ICP-202 to fail? If I'm reading the schematics correctly, it protects the +5V to the INTF board where the PACs plug into. New ICP-N25 is on the way, so hopefully powering the unit with the PAC removed will bring it back to life. |

Never had one of these but I've read a lot about the caps in the player that need to be replaced. Sorry can't help more. |

You'll most likely be needing a full compliment of these: https://console5.com/store/console-cap-kits/nec/pac-n1-pac-n10.html Best of luck with it, I hope you get it all fixed up. |

Yep I ordered the ICP replacements from there. Capacitors for the power supply are almost all 105C good quality caps, but they are packed in there a little tighter than normal so I ordered the power supply cap kit as well since I'll already be replacing the bad ICP. They sell surface mount and through hole kits for the PAC-S10. I ordered the through hole. I've seen photos of the PAC recapped with the leads just trimmed down. Hopefully this makes it easier. Finally, I ordered a replacement battery and battery holder for the PAC. I hope the capacitors are good quality. Kits save a lot of time. They shipped all of this same day, so that is a plus. |

Loving your work. Best of luck with it. Did you grab a few belts too? May as well replace those while you have stuff open. |

IC202 replaced and it is alive! On to: Recapping power supply Recapping INTF board (This is a maybe. I went ahead and ordered a full set of replacement caps based on values I found posted. No idea if they will fit but I stuck to small ones.) Recapping PAC-S10 and replacing battery Alignment |

Good stuff well done! Now go grab a copy of Time Gal to play on it. |

Thanks! I suppose I do need an actual LaserActive release now. It is funny to think that if I can get everything restored this weird plastic-y unit will be worth more than my LD-S2. Kinda like comparing a Red Bull stunt plane to a 747. Has original box with manual, remote, and CPD-S1 controller for the Sega PAC. I like to speculate on the past of these devices. If I had to guess, this was some sort of NOS situation. Someone plugged in a bad Sega PAC, fried it, sent it for repair and then plugged it back in again frying it once more. |

Even the "commons" are expensive by my book. I'm really not looking forward to recapping this PAC-S10. Board is really juicy though so I better not let it sit around. I swabbed most of it off. I hate surface mount stuff! Especially the size of this kit!

Began with smaller board inside the PAC-S10: DWG1365-A Awful smell. Due to the corrosion, I was finding several caps would not remove. I ended up clipping them as close to the board as possible with some small wire cutters. Came back and cleaned thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol, heated up the pads and cleaned again. Continuity will need to be checked before and after the new caps are soldered. A few pads are damaged so I'm planning on using the extra length of the new cap leads as jumpers. The hours I am putting into this has me a little anxious over if this will be successful or not. Mainly over fear of permanently damaging the PAC.

So how did the pack repair go? I hope you got it working! Also, I have a LaserActive too and notice that the Laser stopped focusing (ie moving up and down). Do you know what the cause may be? It was working perfectly the day before (played Bladerunner) When I opened the LaserActive to observe the operation, I noticed the laser wasn't attempting to focus like it usually does. It would slide on the rails like normal, just no attempt to focus. Any insight would be helpful. Cheers! |
