Post subject:  [CLD-D704] Lubricating the Upper Clamp

I have an issue on one of my 704s and I believe the issue lies in the upper clamp. Is there a proper way to clean and lube it, and what are the preferred methods and products?

Thanks!

Is it not gripping? Or is it not letting go?

Only spindle related greasing I do are the small ball bearings in the clamp and center of spindle itself. This is to reduce sound though, not to help loading or playback.

I clamper shouldn’t need any lubrication from the perspective of when the disc begins spinning. Once the magnet locks down the disc, it is completely disengaged from the clamper housing to spin freely.

Like signofzeta and cplusplus said, the only lubrication would be the release mechanism not working properly like when a CD is stuck to it during eject.

Yes, it's just the sound, no grip issues. In the meantime, I found the below thread which describes my exact problem. There's even a youtube video linked, https://youtu.be/Pa_9gU6wWm4 - and my player makes the exact same sound. Based on that thread, it seems like it's the spindle bearing and not the upper clamp.

What's the best way (and product) to lube these?

[CLD-79] Squealing Noise

EDIT: when I say sound, I am referring to mechanical noise, not audio from the disc.

Starting with the 503 and 703 Pioneer depends on the top brace to press down to secure the clamp of the disc. The older players have the strong magnet to clamp the disc. On the newer players There is actually a little button on the top brace that a ball bearing on the top of the upper clamp turns on. If the button has a bump wore in it it may need replacing.

BTW; you don’t see all the slipping on the older magnet design even though it used the same type of rubber mat as the newer players.

Very true!

Thanks for the education. I did not know that. I guess I should be happy the majority of my players were made before the 503/703 models. ;)

There is no way to lube the spindle bearing. You need a new motor if it’s bad.

Oh man - from what I've read in other threads, that is not an easy replacement.

You have to find the part and then you need to put it in and then you need to verify alignment. Major work, sadly.

Grasshopper did mine last time, Duncan the time before, both have since left the building.

You can dial it in with patience but an oscilloscope makes it quick work.
