What audio connections are you using from the player? Can you access the optical digital out and confirm you are getting the same garbled sound. How does the “analog” track sound when you choose it on the L/R analog outputs?

How about choosing “analog” sound (unless this player is only digital sound)?

Can you connect the optical out to an AV Receiver?

It this is with digital sound only the RF signal level may be a little low. The digital bit stream needs a larger RF level to properly decode than the video and analog audio.

OP is from the UK, could it be something with PAL discs??

Edit: wonder if this is audio rot on the digital channels? I have a disc that has horrible audio issues on
the digital channels.

Or was it mentioned that this is happening on all discs?

Might help if you posted the video you took.

These are NTSC players, had one before.
Have you tried using the Toslink out?
What happens when you push the 'Digital audio level' button?
Do you have the volume level on front cranked right up or off?

Rein-o could be on to something with discs.

I'm still waiting for him to post the video he shared on discord but it doesn't look (well, sound) like any laser rot I've ever heard. It's almost as if there's something wrong with the audio board.

He hasn't got a remote to switch to analog track either.
