Post subject:  [CLD-1950] Distorted On-screen graphics + other interference

Hi All...
I wonder if any of you could comment on some image issues I am observing...

Equipment... Pioneer LD Player CLD-1950, TV - Panasonic 60inch LCD appx 7yrs old, Pioneer Receiver - SC-LX85A

Basically, when using the 1950 with various combinations of the above, I am seeing various degrees, (but always present), of image distortion. This distortion shows as the on-screen graphics, (Text - Stop, Play etc), being smudged/ghosted on screen. Sometimes colour smudging or double image. It is worse when no laser disc is playing but is also present when a disc is being played, either native or transcoded NTSC, or native PAL.

I have tried various methods of connection but all show the above to a greater or lesser extent. Composite Video direct to TV, Composite Video to Receiver and HDMI to TV, and also S-Video via a converter, (absolutely awful picture overall).

I am also observing a kind of, herringbone pattern on the playback image from discs, again always there but to a greater or lesser degree however the hardware is connected. Its almost like RF interference that we used to see on analogue transmissions when two channels were too close together.

I am also seeing vertical banding present only when the blue background is present, shown in attached.

I have tried a small Sony CRT TV, and of course, all the above issues are minimal bearing in mind the screen size.
Obviously, I am aware that the LD format was not designed with the sizes of screen and technology we have today.

Does anybody think that the issues described above, (and shown to the best of my ability in the attached pics), could be due to component failue within the LD player? Failing capacitors perhaps?

The cables being used are not esoteric in nature but are not cheap and nasty either.

Looking frwd to comments... :)
Thanks and kind regards Dave

Is this your first laserdisc player?

Where is zeta for this one.

Should I ask first
Are you going to copy star wars from LD to your computer???

Don't want to bust any nuts here but this is pretty normal for what LD is.
Herringbone is crosstalk, a quick google search, yes they don't block that yet.
Google will tell you what it is.

Regarding the graphics issues; I own a similar CLD-2950 and the on-screen graphics on that player do seem to share similar traits to what you describe with your 1950, although the PAL picture quality is generally excellent when projected onto a 90” 4:3 screen via a Sony VW500 4k projector. I also have the later CLD925 which in contrast has razor sharp pure white graphics so perhaps just the norm for the earlier less digitised models? Are you running your Panasonic with any unecessary sharpening and PQ enhancement type modes engaged at all, brightness, colour, contrast settings cranked up a bit too much? May be worth playing around with these see if any improvement can be gained whilst at the same time making a note of the original settings before you begin, good luck

Just a thought, and as rein-o pointed out crosstalk being a cause of the herringbone patterning is there any device or appliance situated close by the 1950 that could possibly be contributing to this or maybe something plugged in that shares the same mains spur or ring - dosen’t cost anything to pull a few plugs out of their sockets just to see if this could be part of the cause?

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply to my question, very much appreciated. Apols for delay in replying but I did not receive any notifications...

No, not my first player... I owned a 1750 from new and whilst it gave many years of great service, it was relegated to the loft as soon as DVD became available. I did check the player from time to time but as I was using it at that point on a massive Plasma/LCD, the crosstalk issue, (that I never noticed prior, was too invasive so I sold it in 2015.

However, I never sold my discs and have even started collecting again, managing to get some very rare titles for very little so that is what persuaded me to look for another player.
I choose the 1950 as it was a couple of generations newer than my original player so I thought it may be better, however some of the issues that I presumed were due to aged/faulty components were still apparent.

As far as settings on the TV, yes I do see a difference but not to any degree that makes me believe that the player is without fault somewhere. Mains interference/internal earthing are certainly possibly responsible for some of the issues but again, I cannot ever remember these visual distortions being apparent when I first started with LD.

Maybe I will look for an even later player but some people are asking what I believe are silly money for these things... My 1950 was in remarkably good condition and at only £100, its still a bargin IMO... I certainly wont be looking at a DVD/LD combo at £400+ at any time soon...

Once again, many thanks

You may actually be happier if you find a working older NTSC player.

If you need the NTSC and or PAL then you don't have as many options.
