Hi my 97 stopped reading laserdisc this past Saturday 8/14/21. But it plays cd. I put in the shop Monday 8/16/21. The technician called me this morning and told me that the optic was bad and that part was not available.

Is there anyone on this forum that my have an optic/pickup for sale?

The shop is wrong. How can optics be bad if it will play a CD? This is a classic "x is bad" statement from shops that can't do laserdisc service. I'm happy to sell one, but they would probably say I sent a broken one after they couldn't readjust unit for new pickup.

Yeah usually when you have issues with LDs the CDs won't play.
You are working with only 1 laser, there aren't multiple lasers inside.

Try to get it back, don't pay as they didn't do anything and post here what your issues are.

Might be a bad cap for the video part of things. Main board cap(s) are the suspects here.

Yes could be this also but I do hope the OP doesn't have to pay to get this BS diagnosis.
These are the types of things that give repair stores a bad name.

Hacks always think the issue is the laser.

Possibly a loading belt in need of replacement and perhaps a few capacitors in the power section / main boards, as already mentioned?
I would start troubleshooting from there. Loading belts are often overlooked.
There is a weight difference between compact disc and laserdisc, so the belt needs to be strong and keep its tension to get the laserdisc up and running.

yes but loading belts are more for the tray not getting disc up to speed.
Thats the spindle motor.

The loading belt does actually make a difference if an LD does or does not play. The loading belt doesn't just move the tray but in most cases (not sure if on the CLD-97 since it has two belts) it also lowers the clamper (Alpha Turn design) or bring the carriage up to the clamper (Gamma & Epsilon Turn design).

If the belt is too loose, it will not exert enough clamping force on an LD disc and thus the machine knows this and will not play. For CD, even a somewhat loose belt will still apply enough force and allow playback.

Oh I'm sorry I understand now, the belt will also raise the clamping part, right?
Thx

I was thinking of belt like on a turntable and never really thought of it more than what I thought it was.

Spindle motor and laser are at a set position in the 97. The tray is lowered down. This is not the belt issue as in the newer players.
