I have a Pioneer HLD-X9 i bought in Japan many years ago from Nicolas, the unit was new.
After 2 years from the purschase i took it off the box (2006) and it worked perfectly for 10 Minutes, then it was boxed again.

Last year i took it off the box and when i inserted the disc, it wants to start spinning (makes 2 or 3 attempts) and then doesn't spin and gives ERROR P5.

After many tries, it also gived me ERROR U1 and the tray got stucked.

I've opened the player, carefully released the tray, changed the Belt, and now it's perfect. However still gives me ERROR P5. The player inside is PERFECT, still has all the grease and everything.

I've even tried to change the GRIP Rubber on the spindle, and it's the same....

The Spindle Motor rotates manually, i've touch it. Do you guys think the motor is damaged?

Any ideas?

Tank you for your help in advance

It sounds like you have really checked most of the basics. The next thing to check does it play a cd with no issue? Also does the LD start to slowly spin with no slip and then stop?

If replacing the grip ring did not work, the next thing is to clean the laser lens. Could also be the power supply but more like a disc read error.

Don't try a CD, these do not play CD's.

Tank you for all your suggestions.

I don't think it's the lens as the player is new, wouldn't make much sense to me, but i can give it a try. Should i clean it with alchool?

As for the power supply, is is still available? But the unit turns on....

NO.
Use something else, alcohol will remove a layer on the laser.

Try tweaking the pots. That was what people here recommended I do with my LD-S9. I now have an LD-S9 brick that was worse than before, but hey maybe it'll work for you.

Thanks to this post, P5 would be a spindle/setup error.

Sounds like the motor doesn't reach full rotation speed fast enough?
This post would imply that it has to be reached within 60 seconds.

U1 = Miss clamp, I get that sometimes on very slippery labels or when I haven't use my LD player for a while the rubber part became rigid. Giving it another spin usually fixes it.

Tank you Julien

Yes it tries to spindle the disc several times (like 3 or 4) it looks like it tries to grab the disc and you hear the noise of starting to spin for 1 second and then stops....then tries again...until it gives P5.

Do you think the motor got "stuck" with years past?

U1 it's solved, i've changed the belt, now it's ok.

I understand what you mean, but i will only touch it with a certain sure of what i will be doing, it's a very exepensive unit to give it tries.

I had a similar issue with my X9. It would produce a P5 error but only on Hi-Vision disc. Regular LD would play fine.

The motor would spin up and accelerate for a few seconds before spinning down. It would do this 3-4 times before finally popping a P5 error. It turned out it was a faulty SYPS board (system power supply). However, P5 can be due to several things.

Damn! If it's the power supply do you know the part number? Just to see if it's still available... i guess i will try from there...

The part number is VWR1276 and it's still available but it's expensive. $235. Plus it may not be the issue. Only way to be certain is if you have a 2nd functioning X9 and swap in the board to be sure.

With the cover off, when you observe the disc spinning before the P5 error occurs, does The disc gain quite a bit of speed before slowing down and producing a P5? With mine it would pick up speed - then slow down - then pick up even more speed - then slow down again - then spin even faster for a few seconds before producing a P5.

Does the P5 happen on all discs every time? CLV, CAV and Muse discs?

Yes ^ check a few discs. P5 also seems to point to the player unable to read the disc.

I would also recommend against ever adjusting the pots.

The disc tries to speed, and in the second or third time i think it speeds a little more....but i will make a video and try to post it.

It's easy to install the supplier board? It has an easy access?

What do you mean by "adjusting the pots"?

I wouldn't touch any servo pots unless you know what you're doing. You need to follow a service manual and have the correct scopes and jigs to perform any kind of line up. It's not that simple a task to change the board as I remember I had to remove the mech assembly to access it. Again this diagnosis is purely a guess based on the issue I had on hi-vision discs and it may be something completely different to the SYPS board.

Your best bet may be to contact Nicolas and see if he can get it sent to pioneer Japan. Or get the player to Kurtis to diagnose. Shipping will be costly though I imagine.

I think Nicolas is out of business for long now... Do you have any new contact of him?
