Good day to all the tech lovers from LaserDisc DataBase;

My name is Percy and I'm currently living in Peru, this is my first post in this community, hope to be part of it and you can help me with some troubles I got with my "brand new" LD Pioneer.

I got this unit in Japan for less than 70 dollars, with the warning that was a junk item.

I usually bought some other items with better luck, to go to the point, this unit has some issues.

1.- As a regular Japanese product, came as a 100v unit, the first time I connected to ac power, I got the stand by light on but when I pressed the power button, nothing noticeable happened just a low sound like something in the disc tray was trying to move, but that's it.

After checking the connectors and some light research online I saw that could be a problem with the power supply, I check some components with my multimeter, but I don't have enough knowledge in this field, so I took it to the technician here in Lima, the supposed to solve the problem with the power supply board.

2.- I connect the repaired board and this time the front panel shows something, I pressed open and nothing really happened, just a sound like the disc tray wants to open, then I press close and the panel shows the instruction but nothing happened.

So I decided to extract the disc tray and connect back the power, but now the problem was that some smoke came from the power supply board. This is the picture where I can see that the F210 resistor is burned.

3.- I made it replaced by the same technician of the first time, and I start to check the tray mechanism, check that the rubber bands are ok, that the holders(don't know the exact name of this part) of the lasers move, and also make manual turning the laser to the up position.

This time when I connect the power supply board(without pressing the power button), the upper laser moves all the way to the center and makes some weird noise, like it doesn't stop moving in this direction(I've disconnected the power).
Then move back manually the top laser to the back of the unit, and when I connect the power supply, the front motors start to spin like trying to close the tray(that I have previously removed).

When I press the power button, another tiny smoke from the power supply and the same resistor is burned.

Sorry for the long history and for my English mistakes, but I want you to explain all the processes I have done.

Can you give some advice on this, and also let me know how to begin reviewing this unit, I really appreciate all your help and support. Also, I hope this is the right section of the forum for a post like this.

Welcome.

F210 is a 1.25A 60V fuse, not a resistor.

Thanks CPlusPlus for your quick answer, I will change the fuse and also I notice that F205 has the same issue(they put a resistor instead of a fuse).

I will replace them and keep testing the LD, thanks

Fuses should never be replaced with resistors, but that being said: If my math and general understanding is correct, that resistor can only support roughly half of the 1.25A rating. Make sure to buy a few of each in the event that they blow again.

Thanks Again C++, I have ordered some fuses to do the replacement, I was checking on the internet and I only found fuses of 125v or 250v, not the 60v that shows the power supply board.

Hopefully, the guys from the electronic supply store here in Lima, told me that they have a few of the same fuse that I need(60v 1A and 1.25)

Let's see tomorrow when I get the parts.

Original fuses are Littelfuse 491 Series. That exact series might be hard to find, so I'd replace with "Very Fast-Acting" green PICO fuses.

Voltage can be 125V, but the amps must match.

After I replace them, I reconnect the power supply board and got the stand by light (this time there wasn't any sound made by the disc tray or anything) But every time I press the Turn on Button or if I try to open de LD or DVD disc tray, the stand by light disappear but nothing shows on the front panel, also there is a buzzing sound that shows up, I'm adding a video, as you can see every time I've press one of those buttons this sounds start and don't disappear until I disconnect the AC power cable.

All I hear in the video is the fan which is normal.

With player unplugged, check F201, F202, F205, F209, F210, F211 for continuity with multimeter. I think that is all of them -- basically check every fuse on power supply.

Did a quick search, and I can't tell if outlets in Peru are either 220v or 120v, but I hope you're not plugging the player directly into a 220v outlet.

Hello jd213, thanks for your answer, in Peru we use 220v , but in this case Im using a source of 100v to connect this unid.

Good Day C++, here are the results of the continuity test:

F201 : Continuity Ok
F202 : Ok
F205 : Ok
F209 : Ok
F210: No Ok - Replaced Again today (03/03/22)
F211: No Ok -Replaced today(03/03/22) with a new fuse

Also today I've noticed that the previous technician changed the D105 with this component, this is wrong? what Should be the correct part for D105.

And the Fuses F202 and F201 are different types from the one I've been replacing, is that correct?

I'm pretty sure someone has replaced your power supply with 120V version, but verify by looking on power supply board towards back of player. It should say "120VAC 50/60Hz 56W".

That shouldn't be a problem as long as it gets 120V not 100V. I'll have to look at the schematics to verify though.

D105 should be a K1V24 SIDAC, not a MOV. Just remove it now and replace with K1V24 once you have everything else working.

F201 and F202 are the appropriate types.

Well, the transformer we use, usually step down 240v to 120V so I guess there is no problem with that, I have already replaced the 2 fuses, so I will do the same with the K1V24 but I will remove it, to do some test.

Ok C++, I have removed the D105, and turned on the unit, its Alive!!!!!! :clap: :clap: :clap: :clap: but , here are some videos:

1.- As you can see, I didn't close all the tray, the mechanism do it by itself, the message in the front screen changed to stop, but make some sounds and nothing really move inside, and the message change to "Open".

I've pressed the Stop,LD,DVD open tray button but nothing happens.



2.- When I press the turn off button, also the unit tries to do something, again nothing happens just a sound as you can hear in the video, and the unit turn off.


Is there any specific position of the tray or the lasers before I turn on the LD Player? or there's something else I should do first.

I can't tell which motor the noise is coming from.

Remove the tray to get a better look. Eject the tray as far as you can and if you press the tabs on the back of the tray, it should pull right out. If you cant eject the tray, you will have to manually turn the loading belt that is under the front left of the tray. Remove the loading belt and clean it with water. Clean the pulleys the belt wraps around with alcohol. This is a temporary fix if the belt is bad.

Leave the tray out. Turn unit on. If tray was in eject position, you will hear similar noise. To the right of the loading belt are two large white plastic gears and to the right of that is a black plastic slider. Slide it right and loading will complete.

If you still hear a motor noise, carefully turn the black worm gear a few times that is attached to motor to the right of the optical lens. It should move freely. Ensure that the white plastic track below it has not cracked (the small white plastic pieces that run from track to the right can break).
