I've recently been watching an LD anime in my collection (PILA-1134) and realized that the picture quality is way off:



Notice the line repeated line shadows (red arrows) and bleeding/smudging (green arrows). Is this a problem with the disc, with the player or with the TV (PVM-1440QM)? Is there anything that can be done about this? The image really doesn't look great and doesn't feel too far from a VHS.
