I have two Pioneer players (DVL-V888 and DVL-919). They both exhibit to one degree or another a vertical line on the right side of the image. See attached.

I took the DVL-V888 to a repair shop along with two sample LD's. The vertical lines would not display on either a 4:3 CRT TV or a 16:9 21" LCD monitor in the shop.

The repairman said it was probably a problem with my setup. I have both a new TV and a new AV preamp/controller but the same lines also appeared in my old setup.

Would appreciate advice as to what is causing this. Thanks in advance!

I didn't know the Pioneers did this.
I can't think right now what its called, but its info that you wouldn't see on a 4:3 set and only something like this that shows all the image.
Maybe overscan??

Try going straight from the LD to the TV, it may be the 4:3 going into the AV receiver and you are seeing more of that whatever its called.
Panasonic LD players had this issue.

Does not prove anything, however I own five working dvl-919's and have never had this anomaly present itself.
Perhaps chiming in on this is not constructive.

CRT TVs have adjustments for overscan and (maybe) horizontal position. I really can’t imagine that the signal from a laserdisc is adjustable, but maybe a failing component is affecting the signal.

Some digital TV’s have issues with the retrace signals in the NTSC video format. Since your white line extends above and below the picture area that means it is not the LD players. Your TV is fitting NTSC picture to the screen fill you selected. Your TV is is creating a line that extents beyond the NTSC signal.

That is an unusual artifact.

I recommend to connect each of your players directly via their composite-video outputs to one or two other 16:9 TV sets that do have composite-video inputs, and see if you get any differences on their screens. As krbahr mentioned, this is likely an artifact of a piece of equipment in your setup interacting with your players or another device.

My specific suggestion to try other TV sets (as opposed to "monitors", and as opposed to using/keeping any processor or other device in line with either player) is to help hunt down the source of this anomaly. Please post back if you do make the tests I mention, and what results you get. I wish you success.
