I have an opportunity to purchase a Pioneer DVL-919 DVD LD Combo for a decent price. Are these good or decent machines? I know nothing about Laserdisc players so any helpful advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Would be glad to weigh in for my part.

Turn the clock back to circa year 2000. Had been eyeing ads from Pioneer about the DVL-919 dvd/LD combo player. They were nearly $1000.00 brand new from factory.
As a mid 30's guy with a family this was a real stretch.

Circa 2008 I bought one brand new from a store in a factory sealed Pioneer box. My very first store bought LD player.

Speed up to 2026, I now have several of these players and have been very pleased with the LaserDisc visual and sound aspect. The remote is key for accessing higher player functions. Very pleased historically. My first unit from over sixteen years ago is still 100% operational with much use.

Actively have an eye on ebay for auctions regarding other dvl-919's however they are snatched up very quickly due to popularity of the product and Pioneer name. The Japanese counterpart is on the table even though a power converter is needed for States side usage.

I do not have a technical review except to say that I utilize RCA hookups and they work through my Toshiba dvd recorder that I record LaserDiscs to dvd from time to time. These two units are compatible with my two flat screen 65" and 75" ROKO ONN Walmart purchased units. The appeal being RCA hookups still offered with this product line. Many Flat screen 4K's no longer offer RCA options.

Only detractor I found with the DVL-919 is that the dvd function is sub-par. Have not utilized this function much so suffice to type, not fair that I critique it, except to type that resolution and dvd functions were not 100% optimal.

Would also like an HLD-X9 muse player as well if fortune allows. They are available on eBay in small numbers from time to time.

Bottom line I would recommend the DVL-919 no factor.

Cheers to the members !

Have yet to come across one of those combo units without it having an issue where it would repeat the same segment over and over at the beginning of Side B of a disc after the auto-flip.

A good thing to remember - Every platform will have it's good aspects and undesirable aspects.
Very thankful that my experience with the DVL-919's in my collection has not been the same as spyrogyro's experience with dvd/LD combo units.

Another good thing to note - there are many LD players available second hand in the interwebs to consider at this juncture of evolution.

My Mitsubishi M-V6022 LD player has been enjoyed for many years. Also enjoyed a Sony MDP-600, although in both these cases it has been few years since plugging them in.
(I will play test this fall and report their operational status.)
I found the picture resolution lacking from both of these players compared with the DVL-919 though.

If curious about a dvd video recorder, the Toshiba DR430KU has served me most excellently over the years. Just an aside !

Just because I have not had chronic flaws with my DVL-919's does not mean they are without issues by no means.
I still recommend for the record.

Cheers to the membership !
Keep 'em spinning kids !
