That happens often due to the lack of video sync up. But since you play CDs okay and intermittent on LDs, try cleaning the clamps. Could be the discs slip upon spin-up, don't get to proper RPMs and the laser doesn't read and so shuts down. The clamping discs may have residue build up, stuck particles that are glazed, etc, that need cleaning away.
Best way is if you can take loose and lift off the top clamp, so the bottom one is easy to reach as well as the top one. While you are at it, clean the lens just for the ease of access.

That's the same mech as the DVL-700/90 and the rubber at the disc table is known for going bad. Cleaning the rubber might solve it. As pointed out it could very well be disc slip.

The rubber sheet is part number VEB1272 and it shows as not available. I use VEB1237 (which is for the 503, 703, 704, 79, 99....). The size is a "bit" different. It works but it takes great care installing it. Once properly installed it works fine
