Even when you just close the tray (you don’t have to have a disc installed) the pickup should come out of the turn mechanism and detect if a disc is installed. There are switches to let the controller know if the pickups are in the turn mechanism, switches for the A or B side. I have seen a bad pickup movement motor totally shut down these players. Whichever pickup is on the bottom use your finger to move it out toward the spindle motor. When you power the unit on it should move. If it doesn’t then you have issues with one of the pickups or a switch. The DVD laser movement is controlled by the top DVD board and the LD laser imovement is controlled by the lower LD board. |

If the first pickup doesn’t move I would turn the worm gear by finger to put it back in the turn mechanism, rotate the gears for the turn mechanism to flip it over and move out the other pickup and then see if it moves when you power the unit on. |
