I just recently purchased a "mechanic's special" Pioneer DVL-909 off eBay...the seller said that the disk tray doesn't open so I assumed I would just need a belt. Turns out I was wrong...the player is seemingly lifeless! When you press the power button the big silver arm with the lasers on it moves a tiny bit and that's it, the player doesn't do anything else or respond to any of the buttons on the front.

Image

I didn't see anything unusual inside, nor do I smell the unmistakable fishy odor of bad capacitors, so what could be wrong? Where should I start?

Before you can do anything you need to turn the movement motor wheel by hand to get the top pickup all the way into the turn mechanism at the back. Nothing will happen before you do that as it looks like the one on the bottom is also out of the turn mechanism. The bottom one can be out if the top one is in it. They cannot both be out. Then plug it in and try again.

Good luck!!!

Okay, but what does it look like? I'm not used to repairing these kinds of electronics...

I can see both the top and bottom pickups are not retracted into the rotating assembly at the rear but what I can't see is a way to retract the pickups.

EDIT: Retracted both pickups, turned the machine back on, all it does is eject the top pickup a tiny bit before becoming catatonic again. The display up front works but that's it, nothing else does.

Does someone perhaps have the RRV1888 service manual in digital form that I could use for troubleshooting my machine?

The service manuals do not explain how to fix issues. You get diagrams, schematics, and how to adjust a working player. Not a normal easy failure. This is a risk when you buy players with issues.

Well, I bought the player under the assumption that I could find manuals and other sources of assistance on how to repair it...

I hope you don't try to return it now after you had it opened and realized it isn't an easy fix.

I didn't pay very much for it and I know someone who repairs these things so I'm going to stick with it. Even if I pay them to repair it I'll still have less in it than a fully working DVL-909 sells for on eBay.

If you are able to get it working from the person you know or yourself then you are doing well, a tech like krbhar can fix them but if it needs parts it
will depend on what is available.
Once fixed it won't need service again for some time.

The reason why I was looking for the RRV1888 service manual is because it mentions how to disassemble the player properly and also how to make adjustments. But so far this is the only place I've found it and I don't really want to pay 12 dollars for a sketchy download.

Service manuals do not tell you how to take apart and assemble players but it will tell you how to adjust a working player.

Yeah, that's not what I need unfortunately...I can't even figure out if there's a way to manually release the disc tray, to see if the player might play a DVD when one is put inside.

If the top laser will not go into the turn mechanism and stay when you power it on you have serious issues. This is not something easy, this is not normal for these units. It is non-functional in its condition. You bought a player that is probably only good as a parts unit. The risk you take buying a mechanics special.

It does stay in there when I power it on though. And the fact that the front display does respond to the button inputs shows there's some life inside the player, it's just that something is broken between the buttons and the actual mechanisms.

You can believe Kurtis when he says you have a SERIOUS problem! I bet the front LED is flashing as well. From my experience it's probably the laserunit and/or the turning mechanism. If you are in the US, send the player to Kurtis and have him take a look.

The mechanism to hold the spare pickup and flip the laser pickup for side b is located at the back. Take the cover off the turn mechanism (6 screws on the back panel) and there is a motor with a belt on it. Make sure it is all the way in one direction. If the power cord was pulled without first powering off the unit, the pickups may not be in the correct orientation. If the turn mechanism is out of alignment, the slider motor won't do what it's supposed to.

Does the red power light come on when you plug the unit in?

There should be one pickup up against the spindle motor (it SHOULD be the DVD pickup if the player was turned off correctly) and the Laserdisc pickup should be upside down in the top of the turn mechanism. Make sure it is not sticking out of the mechanism and part way on the upper rail. The player typically can correct itself, but not if both pickups are not where they are supposed to be (only one should be ever un-parked at a time) it will be confused.

[edit]
Now that I've looked at the picture blown up, that exactly what the problem is. The laser pickup has come out of the carrier. You should be able to GENTLY push that pickup back into the turn mechanism (with the power off of course). Once it is pushed all the way back, turn on the unit. If that doesn't clear up, then there will be something ELSE wrong too.

Inspect the slider rails very carefully to make sure they are not broken. I've had at least 4 players that use this pickup mechanism where the slider motor has sheered off of the pickup, and one where the pickup bar broke from the mounting post on the platform.

The red power light comes on when it's plugged in, yes. And when it's powered on the blue light on the front is steady.

I wound the top pickup as far back as it will go using a little gear on the unit and it does stay in the pickup assembly. I did the same with the bottom pickup as well. For now I'm going to get the player looked at by someone more knowledgeable and see how that works out.

It's so very unsatisfying when there's no follow-up on a technical problem when the unit is taken to an experienced tech: What happens then is MOST interesting and it's very disappointing not to give a thorough and detailed follow up on the subject at hand...
