[DVL-919] Power up issue

Post subject:  [DVL-919] Power up issue
I just picked up a DVL-919, my first LD player. When I plug it in, the red light above the Standby button comes up. When I press that button - or any other button for that matter - the light goes out and that's it. I have not opened the case, but there is visible swelling of the case in the right rear corner of the machine, which makes me think a power supply has probably fried.

Any idea what's going on? Are parts available? And could this be fixed by someone who has near zero soldering skills?

I'm about a 1/2 hour west of Boston in case someone around here can offer in person help.

Damn, if that power supply blew that hard and buckled the case I would be impressed. I guess your 919 has an atomic reactor power supply :lol:

There are lots of great topics with info to help you out on your 919, do a google search and you should find tons of info that will help you out.

Since the red light does come on the surge suppressor in the power supply is good so it is not that fix. Next is use the service manual in the manual area

and check the output voltages from the power supply and see what is good and what is bad. If all bad then you made need a new supply.

I got the case open and verified that the small fuse mentioned in other threads is still intact.

As for the case swelling, that's a mystery as there's nothing anywhere near there that would cause it.

I do have a multimeter somewhere but no idea how to use it on something like this. Krbahr and I have PMed a couple of times. He very much wants to help but I'm afraid my capabilities are below what's needed to get much farther.

I think it got hit from shipping and dislodged something inside.

This is a case of want but can't do and must send off for repair.

I've sent pics to blam1 and traded emails and he's stumped! I picked it up in person at a yard sale, so shipping damage is unlikely.

If you can recommend someone in the Boston/Providence/Hartford/New Haven/Long Island areas who might have a clue and not charge an arm and a leg, I'd be grateful. Otherwise I'll put my time, energy, and money into finding another machine.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to post a follow-up. Fixing this was beyond my capabilities and shipping it would not have been cost effective (and probably would have made it worse), so I sold it as a parts machine locally. The guy who bought it was able to get it going, but it took a lot of work. He had to change several caps and do some mechanical work to get the laser back on track. Some of what he did blew some of the on-board fuses, so he had to replace them too. The DVD laser is fried, but he didn't really care. In the end, he got a working 919 for relatively short money and I think he learned a lot fixing it.

My first time to join the forum here, My 919 was in store for years since Pioneer service centre could not repair it due to it EOL. My 919 is able to power up but it will display "Mecha CPU". The Pioneer tech told me was the PSU problem and I was not so sure if he told me the whole picture. I'm looking for advises what its error mean. Thanks in advance.https://ibb.co/6bjXKnj

I found the "Mecha CPU" error in the Pioneer service manuals from other models. It explained the error as "Difference in version of the internal ROM of the mechanism controller and of the flash ROM". It looks to me the flash ROM likely corrupted and may due to battery flat. A technology which is commonly use in the older day which for backup the file.(some still using such old tech nowadays) My DVL-919 is ready to toast.. What a shame.. :(
