I have a new to me player, as above.

It was sold as a 'won't open' tray issue, after opening the cover and turning a few things that works fine now.
Tray opens, closes fine, and plays A fine.
DVDs are OK.
The LD 'braking' before open does seem to take too long.

It does try to play B, pickup assembly moves to center, but no picture. It seems to try speed, more speed, and then outrageous speed before it gives up. Same in both quick and normal changeover.

I have seen references to a position screw for B, but it's not obvious to me.

Help?

If you think the disc is having trouble spinning up and down the easiest thing to do first is take off the top and clean the spindle pad where the disc sits, that player doesn't use the notorious grip ring, however there is still a chance that ring has gotten dirty enough and causing the disc to slip.

Yeah, I have no idea what screw you would be talking about on this player.

I would try as above, clean the grip ring, if it still slips then you need to search up other options like the plasti dip or something else as that part IF its that part
is no longer sold or if you luck out someone may have 1 or 2 left in stock.

That player while I've never fixed one or any players, I do know are easier to fix due to later technology and smaller boards etc.

But try the easiest thing first and try to adjust anything last.
If its a side B centering that would be something again to adjust last.

Sounds like grip issues for sure.

The 909 has the white grip ring and all you should need to do is clean it but I doubt it needs it.

For side B it sounds like the spindle motor centering is off. While trying to read side B just push the assembly to one side a little and see if it starts playing, if not the try the other way. I’m thinking one direction will make side B play.

sj - spins up fine [per side A] but 'braking' is very long.... I did clean white grip early on.
r - I had searched DVL-everything, would have sworn some mentioned a white position setting
sz - all above...
k - spindle motor centering - would that affect 1 side but not the other? Sounds like a both sides name.... I will try pushing the extended pickup around, left and right, correct? If 1 way fixes, how to correct?

UPDATE
Prognosis negative!
While confirming the disc was exactly above the black spindle/pizza table/spring retainer, it let go, and now has no legs [I can't confirm they were there, but they are not now!] Pizza table came out in the disc, I found all 3 'clips'.

K - I can not find any DVL models at Pio Parts, where to look, what other gens share same part?

All - ring remains clean and white. I wonder if the pizza table was broke as a 1 way bearing effect, and speeding up was good, braking not - until I messed with it and it finally gave out?

If you are going to use terms like pizza table then you better supply pictures as I’ve never seen pizza in a laserdisc player. I can help with parts but I cannot help you diagnose using these terms.

The centering test I mentioned only effects side B.

I tried Pio Parts to get a proper name.
Its color is black, its function is spindle-mounted 'platter' to support disc, additional function is to retain spring, and its shape is similar to familiar 'pizza table' - a disc with legs.
Pics to follow...

Just verify it is the part on top of the spindle motor disc clamp that has a ring to center a CD and then the larger area is to fit into a LD.

Then write me at kbahr@comcast.net and we can discuss how to get the part you need.

THX kris - we do call this shape pizza table mid east coast, for decades - a pizza (in a box) protector so box top doesn't get in the cheese.

Is it kurt? Emailed note.

Just in case anyone is following along....

The darn thing is strangely fragile.
Kurtis tried (THX!) to get me one, and as with others, his broke.
If you don't have a good reason to try, and the spring moves it up and down just a bit, leave it alone.

I recently bought a used (and supposedly refurbished with new belts/grease and laser adjustments) DVL-919, and it has similar problems with side B.

Thankfully I bought it from Amazon Marketplace so I won't have any trouble returning it. I first contacted the seller to see if they would fix it, but they tried to blame it on damage during shipping (which is unlikely considering how carefully packages are treated in Japan), so I guess fixing it out of pocket is too much trouble for them.
