Post subject:  [DVL-909] PRC Hub broken - what to do?

Hi, I was watching an LD this weekend and when the disk finished and I ejected it, something inside sounded like it went spinning off at high speed.
After removing the cover and some considerable time later I was able to recover the spring and broken PRC hub, which had lodged itself deep inside.
As expected, the three clips are broken off rendering the part (VNL1684) useless.

I've tried PacParts and various other sources but every time I'm told the part is discontinued. OK, so the player is 20 years old so this isn't unexpected.

It's a real shame, as otherwise the player is cosmetically perfect and was working flawlessly. The only other failure I've experienced was the power supply, and that was
simply the startup cap that had dried out.

If anyone can help source or offer advice on how to obtain this part for me I'd be eternally grateful.

Dave.

The PRC hub is a real pain in the butt. The legs are so brittle you can't reliably pull one off another motor. I've tried numerous times to get one off the turntable with very little luck. You can also try to take the entire turntable off the motor, but that is almost as difficult (and resetting the proper height is a whole other kind of painful).

Ultimately, my best recommendation is to replace the entire motor assembly.

Thanks everyone, in the end I went with the complete spindle motor replace, I picked up a good used one from eBay. During the repair I replaced both drive belts as well.

I'm pleased to report after a long soak test on both LD's and DVD's that I once again have a healthy DVL-909 !

I took photographs along the way as I carried out the repair, they might be useful.

Great with high resolution pictures and detailed description. Is there a need to adjust the spindle motor or is it normally plug and play?

In my case it was not necessary to align the spindle motor, after playing at least a dozen LD's and DVD's all the way through it shows no sign of glitches whatsoever.

All in all a great result :D

Normally there is a need to adjust as I've been told many times by Grasshopper.

So you lucked out on that.
Glad you got the player working again.

Hi rsdave,

great to hear that your player lives on.

Thanks so much for the pictures you added, really helpful  .

Enjoy spinning the big (& small) silver discs.

Cheers

FYI I've begun manufacturing the PRC Hub. They aren't on eBay yet but should be in a week or 2. If you search VNL-1684 it should come up.
