Post subject:  [DVL-909] No CD playback

It reads ld and dvd ok but no cd. That’s the first for me. Usually it’s the dvd that doesn’t work on other units I repaired. From time to time when it stops reading dvd the dvd laser hits the spindle motor making the tray getting stuck.
Anyway, first things first...
I was under the impression not reading cd was a centering issue...
It plays ld and dvd but refuses cd. It attempts to read the cd but can’t decide what laser to use... it changes between dvd and laser and then ejects the cd/dvd drawer
Any ideas...?

Hi Kris,
do you get error messages? If not try to get it in test mode (see service manual), you have service remote so it is easy, you should get a lot of information on screen...

Could it be the laser used for LD/cd doesn't go as far as dvd laser and thus it cannot read CD intro lead track?

Regards Edwin

The spindle motor centering is more critical with CD's and DVD's, this needs to be checked

need to have a closer look when I find the time. The centering is the first to investigate. fairly easy job with trial an error.
It's strange some players need that kind of adjustement. how the hell does centering go bad. the screw itself is fastened with some kind of loctite coming from the factory.
never used the service remote on a dvl before, if all else fails ... it's the next logical step.

update, centering did the trick. it took 15 minutes finding the sweet spot . It recognized cd's after one slight turn. getting it to read the disc took patience and a steady hand adjusting the centering. it really is a question of listening for the laser to find the sweet spot to play. after a few slight turns it found every track without a hickup.
next challenge , does it still play ld and dvd (without the dvd laser going crazy on dvd's after stop mode)?
